My son recently started work in the UK and got his social security number. We were just trying to make sense of his payslip. His taxable pay was the same as his basic pay. Do UK employees have TFA's like we do in Ireland or is all income taxable. I can't see anything on his payslip to suggest that he is on emergency tax. Does he have to apply to the Inland Revenue for allowances ? I've done a bit of googling but it all seems a bit confusing. Could some kind, knowledgeable person give us some advice.

The UK system is similar though the terminology is different.

I think their website is better and more comprehensive than www.revenue.ie

Anyway, here a link to a whole heap of pages all about tax codes which
    should answer all your questions:

Excellent link, thanks a million. I agree that it is more user friendly than revenue.ie. We were able to figure his payslip out, thanks again.
