Advice on buying a laptop

Hi, I unexpectedly need to buy a new laptop in a hurry (will be buying tomorrow) and I don't have time to do any research so if any-one could give me some advice that would be great:

    Budget: €500
Use: College work, web browsing, streaming, downloading and playing media, small bit of programming but nothing very heavy (java & PHP)
Brand & OS: Preferably not HP as my now-defunct laptop was one and had alot of trouble with it. Generally use Windows.
Screen: Not looking for a netbook so a screen of say 12-14" would be good. Don't need HD or anything.
Battery: A really good battery would be a great bonus, the old HP lasted for about 20 minutes.

I don't need it to be high-powered enough for gaming (nothing higher than The Sims anyway :)) or anything but I've had trouble with other laptops not being able to play films etc that I've downloaded because they couldn't handle them (kept freezing etc) so I'm really looking to avoid that.
I really don't know alot about laptops but I'd like to avoid going into a store and getting talked into buying something I don't want/need so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

why the obsession with bricks and mortar shops - you save so much online and get the same sort of warranties anyway...

the only good deals in B+M shops in Ireland appear to be the occasional good deal from Argos.

However - these are generally only on 15.6 inch screen laptops.

if you want a 12 to 14 inch laptop I'd really recommend going online.

Here's a decent 13.3 inch dual-core low voltage Lenovo. I have a laptop with the same chip and it will do all that you are asking for.

That would cost you less than €400 delivered. Battery life good at 7 to 8 hours. Lightweight at 1.6kg. Nice screen.

This is similar except has bigger hard drive, hdmi, more ram. probably worth it for the hdmi.

delivery in 2 days from that site for £9.95 so you'd have it quickly. best deals anywhere on that site at the mo.
