Get the feeling there will be a massive turnout, fine day and all that.
Could be a pivitol day in Irish politics. The end of cute-hoorism and the nod-wink culture - I wish.

    Voted a half hour ago.

I was talking to the newsagent across the road from the polling station, who has been monitoring the comings and goings all day. Says it looks like the turnout in our area is a lot higher than usual with a lot more younger people voting.

Anyhow, he said one person in their thirties came in and was complaining that they did not see the picture of the candidate they promised their No. 1 to on the ballot paper. Transpired that they thought the person canvassing was the candidate.

Older guy came to herselfs door canvassing for Derek Nolan of Labour. Her son (8) answered the door, took the leaflet and came back in. "Mom, Mom! Don't vote for that Labour guy, he looks nothing like his picture!" :pac:

    Done the deed!

Voted for FG all the way, only in order to help them get an over all majority and hopefully no more general elections for five years, unfortunitly i do not believe that in them but they are the best of a very bad lot, it's a pity Shane Ross and his independence alliance didn't form a party and get quality candidates in every constituency and give the people a real choice.

I listened, watched and red over the last weeks. What gets up my skin is the strong association with the farming community and Fine Gael. Biggest culprit, Farmers Journal

In my local area all the local farmers, who also work in the ESB, Eircom, An Post and any other (former) govt establishment vote and sometimes canvass for Fine Gael.

Most of them have not the foggiest what their mandate is or even their agri policy. The thing is, their grandfather/relatives was given the land by the creation of the new state and have fooking hoarded it since then. Their old aunt dies and they inherit that also. This gets up my tits, because they have it every way, govt job and 60 acres which they govt from the govt upon creation of free state. Anybody else (like me) who wants to enter has no hope, land is exorbitantly high and all tied up.

Grow a pair of balls and be different for once and vote for somebody who will make a difference, maybe it is genuinely Fine Gael this time, but not every time since the 1920's. Have a bit of self respect and objectivity.

By the way I have no political affiliation at all. I vote for the man/woman who will do the best job for the next 5 years potentially.

What a load of ball oxs, I never read such biggioted views since i came on here, this country has moved on from the past, no thanks to narrow minded individuals who dwell on who has what, everyone is entitled to an education and in turn can follow what ever career path they choose, what you inherit in life is not important, it's self fulfillment in what you achieved to get there thats whats important, I read the farmers journal every week and unless i missed something i never read in it once either how good FG is or to vote for them,
People are voting for FG in numbers because they either believe in them or they feel there is no other crediable alternative, (i fall into the later category).

By the way voting for the man/woman who will do the best job for the next 5 years is not worth jack sh!t if they are not in a party of some sorts thats my view anyway.

The IFJ did run the heading 'Gael Force' last week, but the article was based on what the poles were saying so I can't see how they could be seen to favour FG.

Interestingly, (As far as I can see), they were the only party to advertise in this week's edition. Judging by the person they've posing as a 'farmer', it must be about 20 years since they seen one. Certainly no farmer around our way dresses like that!! :D

He has not been elected yet but he is almost sure of a seat. He was running second in a five seater last time I heard.

Former Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan has been eliminated.

kboc is right about the journal.
They always talk about a "good price" for land, meaning high, whereas a lower price is of course better for new entrants or progressive farmers wanting to expand.
It's all about supporting the status quo.

But you'll have your chance to expand now, kboc, as the supports to land prices are removed and forced sales run out of time, leading to no-reserve auctions US-style. I hope you have cash!

Now that every field with boreen frontage or pile-of-stones ruined cottage isn't being seen as a site anymore, one big price support is gone.

The IMF will take the knife to the rest of them, the forestry premium, the SFP you name it. There will be nothing like REPS if the IMF aren't getting their geld.

There are plenty forced sales going on at the moment, just no takers at the asking price, and ridiculously patient bank managers.

The crash hasn't even started yet, and for me, that means that I have stopped being a land seller, and at some point will start building up my acreage again.

    .

But a lot of money for these funds comes from the EU (All of the SFP does). Surely while they are making these payments to other EU farmers such as those in the UK and NI, they will not remove them from here. If they remove them when the country gets poorer does that not defeat the whole purpose of ever paying them in the first place???? They were meant to be an income supplement.

I can't see a Labour head getting it. Though in Politics, Sean Sherlock was mentioned twice, as well as FG's Simon Coveney and Fergus O'Dowd.

    I haven't got a notion myself tbh.

Year and a bit ago I was at a Teagasc meeting in Maam Cross, something along the lines of farm finances. Local bank manager was there as was a regional guy who dealt with farm loans. You would swear they had nothing to do with the recession the way they were talking, how business was so tough for them. Swear to God I nearly threw up.
