Can I be the first to wish the British, Australians and South Africans on the phoney Irish cricket team the worst of luck wherever and whenever they play.

Oh yeah, fúck cricket and all who sail in her (especially the Dubs on the English team )

Wow what a childish post Vintagekits. AFAIK know theres a couple of south africans and an aussie, the rest of the team are Irish born and bred. They ran hosts Bangladesh close, hopefully they can pull off 1 or 2 shocks in the rest of the tournament

    Pawwwwleaase!

It's a sport I have no interest in and if infuriates me to see it getting coverage in the Irish media when it has NO support throughout the country especially when you see Irish boxing getting so little. Last night was the irish senior finals and half the finals never even got shown - including Olympic medal wins - they didnt even mention the fúckin results!

Fúck Cricket, Fúck Cricketers and Fúck cricket coverage and their spammers!

Only a gob****e would ever play cricket.

Weren't you the same poster giving out to a few of us for not getting behind our Irish boxers like Andy Lee? Who ironically was born in London. Bit hypocritical to don your Irish colours when it suits you...

It's the cricket world cup, the pinnacle of the sport and for a country with such little interest in the sport we've done well to qualify.

(I've switched my name to slapbangwallop because that is what I am on other forums)

I dont remember that, but at lets Lee considers himself Irish, 100% Irish and only irish, he also fought for Ireland at the Olympics and both his parents are Irish - I am not sure Ireland's top players like Botha and Johnson have a drop of Irish blood in them, in fact they make Tony Cascarino seem like Darby O'Gill!

Yes, the Cricket World Cup is the pinnacle of that sport but saying Ireland done well to qualify is like saying that Irish rugby team did well to qualify for the Rugby world cup. Only a handful of British and former British colonies play the game.

How bad do you have to be not to get into the world cup?

Lets put it this way - would I be wrong in saying that Afghanastan narrowly missed out?

You obviously pay more attention to cricket than you let on if you were following Afghanistans progress in qualification! Regarding coverage, when have you ever seen live cricket on RTE? I doubt if amateur boxing has much of a bigger following among the Irish public than cricket, both are minority sports which people only take note of when theres Irish success. Before the formation of the GAA cricket was hugely popular in rural Ireland.

Cricket hasnt got a percentage of a the following that boxing has - well, that is outside of the middle class Brit-pandering media! OH YES I DID!!

p.s. that IS me playing cricket in Mobberley, Cheshire in the summer.

Of the Ireland team that played yesterday only 2 of them could be possibly considered not Irish, Botha and Johnston. BUT, they have both lived in Ireland for 10 odd years, have Irish spouses, work in Ireland and help/have helped to coach the next generation of Irish cricketers. It's not like they came over just to play cricket like Hamish Marshall tried to do and rightly imo wasn't allowed do.

The other 9 guys are Irish through and through so no complaints there.

Yes, cricket is a minority sport in this country but it's not the only one. There are loads of clubs around the country but especially in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Derry. The game is always expanding here, especially now in Connacht too. Its following is increasing constantly.

One thing that people overlook is how inclusive the sport is. Visit any cricket club in this country and you will see people of Asian, English, Australian, South African and Irish descent all competing together on the same team.

How many GAA clubs can you say that about?

As for the commenting on how easy it is to get in, the qualification process for the cricket world cup is far more competitive than the rugby world cup but there's no complaints about that. And yes, Afghanistan did narrowly miss out on qualifiaction (which shows you take more than a passing interest).

It says less about the GAA than it does about the colonialist nature of the sport or should I say the British Empire influence!

Guys, I wouldn't take too much notice of Vintage's views on these "English" sports. There is just a little hostility on his part. Sure, he'll be cheering on the Scottish today at Murrayfield. All these "foreign" Irish rugby players, **** them!

If we're going to start considering people Irish because they were born here or lived here for a while, despite not having a drop of Irish blood, well then, I don't know.

Get over it; that excuse has been played to death. Time to move on. Sport
is supposed to be above this.

Like I said, we as a country sent a team to a WC, we beat England, set records, be bloody grateful and celebrate it. It may never happen again.
I guess it's our mentality for celebrating failure, that now we achieve something, we must find excuses and criticise.

Bang on! as in I will celebrate their failure!

Nice to hear them singing the phoney Oirish anthem in the dressing room after defeating das Mutterland
