heard yesterday that the hold up with the main street is not due to financial problems but because the council want to make south main street a quarter for restaurants and divide the town into different districts such as, all the bars up by monck street etc... central main street conmmercial units and business, south main street full of restaurants etc...

the business in south main street are opposed to this and dont want that to happen and are up in arms about it and feel like that end of the town is the poor end and want to council to start the street works as soon as they can but the council are dragging their heels because the business owners wont agree to their plan....

whats your views on this ?

Haven't heard anything about this but I doubt its true but if it is I don't know the council or anyonecan legally do it as you can't tell someone where to have there business espcially at a time where there is so much empty units.

no your right there...they cant tell you but they can use gentle persuasion.... making things difficult .... not helping where they should... id be bitterly disappointed if that street wasnt finished off this year. i wouldnt say simon's place are too happy about it either... they have scaffolding up around their place the last year or more now waiting for them i presume......

What are Simon's waiting for? I heard that that part of street won't be paved because of the gradient... not sure if it's true.

I still haven't heard anything of south main street being zoned for restaurants. That's totally absurd if you ask me.

The restaurents on St Main Street isnt that off the wall of an idea, this is kind of how Shopstreet in Galway is laid out. At the bottom of shop street where all the big name shops are, it runs into Quay street where lots of really nice small stylish restaurents are located in a group, with a few good bars inbetween they might be fashioning it on that idea.

During race week, quay street is pretty much turned into a festival quarter, its always packed and people are allowed to drink on that street from plastic cups... It creates a nice atomosphere.

I have to say Shop Street in Galway is brilliant and I'd love to see a version here in Wexford

well and good if they are gonna finally loosin the chains and allow us live like normal mature adults in our own towns... itd be great that we finally fall into the european trend and extend our draconian opening hours.... finishing at 2 is ridiculous but i cant see this changing while we are in this current economic climate... reason being for this is that the government doesnt have the money to spend on the extra coppers needed to police the streets for the length of time the pubs and clubs are open.

It's almost an eating & drinking quarter already... but Colman Doyle and the Doyles of Buglers own half the street anyway so any moves by the council to try and 'persuade' shops to move out would hit the buffers rapido. And as for the casino...

I think the proposal up above was that south main street be for food and the north be for drink. Not all of it focused on the South Main Street. I still don't see it happening though... At least I hope not. I like the spread.

seen all the road markings on south main street yesterday for the refurbishment... seems they will still have cars going down that way still, but the footpaths will be widened on either side to pedestrianise it more and there may be only evening access for cars down that way with the same style as we see now around the aib bank / o briens/ click area of the main street...

so hopefully this will happen in september as decoda mentioned.

Yea saw those markings over the weekend...can anyone confirm when/if work will start and waht exactly is being done?

i presume you can get these up in the planning office.... county hall or maybe they have moved to the new building in newtown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭RadioRetro

Yeah, they've moved to the new Civic Offices and the BC is now in the old CC offices in Hill Street.

no but it surly is dragging on a bit... i seen in the latest tidy towns survey post analysis and they even mentioned that the south end of main street needed some work. they specifically mentioned how nice the rest of the main street looked and is presented but that section needs some work so hopefully that is further impetus for whoever is in charge to get their finger out!

I heard today that the contractors (the same contractors that have done previous sections of the Main Street) are planning to mobilise for next Monday morning. Lets hope that they make a start soon or it won't be worth while starting before the opera festival begins.

Fresh spray-painted indicators of utility accesses and other stuff appeared on the street this week so it can't be long now.

was on south main street this morning.... no sign of workers moving in yet.

also forgot to mention that the scaffolding around simons place has finally been taken away!! about time... so this street has to be on its way now shortly..

also i see the old woolshop has a new entrance carved out beside megamix... does this mean bobby o neill is going to have a nightclub in there as previously planned???

also the south main street has been marked out but the little patch in the middle from simons place down to uncle sams hasnt been.,.. i know there was problems wiht foundations of buildings there etc and they thought they may not be able to do paving there in that one section as they were afraid buildings would collapse...

    anybody any more info ?

I think that's the fire escape for the new S51 smoking area/function room.

The new part of South 5 is already open. My mates played a gig in there two weekends ago. I don't personally like how they have two separate entrances now though which is not something I deem optimal. It's ok if they were right beside each other, but instead, S51's entrances are sandwiching a few other shops, thus breaking continuity.

    Simon's place is looking fantastic.

There are cones on either side of the road stopping people parking at the end of South Main Street. Looks like work may proceed shortly.

As did mine the weekend before.... and I thought that new door was the fire escape? When we went to the Sunday night gig we entered via the front door, through the pub, left and left again. There was no other way in.

i seen alot of cones around the very south end of the main street this morning down by flanagans and michael kelly's pub. wasnt able to check up around uncle sams area.

they have started digging just outside Flanagans casino now anyway. So they are probably working their way up towards town.

That work thats going on outside Coleman Doyles dosent look like resurfacing/paving to me..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

they are digging and laying cable and stuff for the esb on the main street at the moment.. one of the workers told me the paving wont be starting until after christmas. but this work is necessary for the paving...so its all part of it.
