What will a new government bring to Agriculture??

Rather than another political bashing thread, what do you think the new government will do to help agriculture over the next 5 years? To me it is very unclear. This election seems to have been focused totally on the IMF and NAMA and I haven't heard one mention of Agriculture.

As farmers, we had a few very tough years in the last 10 years and while the whole country was "becoming rich" with construction, many of us had to keep our heads down and work hard to keep things going. We couldn't expand with the price of land and we were almost forgotten about.

Last year, I feel that we were noticed again for the first time in years. We were the main contributors to exports (food & Agricultural) which gave a glimmer of hope to the economy.

Do you think this new government will recognise this or will we just be a cash cow for them which they will bleed dry through taxes??

Lets face it, there aren't too many other sectors for them to tax.

    What's your opinion??

Better not be a land/property tax, if they do bring anything like that in I'll be off to Oz to open an Irish pub!:P

If live exports are curtailed L. maith an fear will be laughin. Whoever gets in will have a hard time. I think one thing they could do is make it easier to employ someone.

I'm going to vote FG, because on paper their policies are the least bad of all that are on offer.
However when they get in I guess they will just simply get overwhelmed by the scale of the banking and fiscal black hole, and the insistence of our EU paymasters that we cannot default.
On the other side, they will be faced with a pretty much immovable object in the civil and public service aparatus, which are pretty much non reformable.
So the time and energy left to devote to agriculture will be zilch.
Expect no favours from next government, no matter who is in power.
We will just have to do as we always did. Plough on.

I agree that all I have heard seems to the IMF. And while I appreciate this is important, after the Germans slam the door in our faces on day 1 - what are the lads planning on doing for the next 5 years... ?

I had a look at the fine gael site, and coudln't see anything re agriculture there...

Re what lies ahead - I found an old rates book at home last night... I seriosuly hope that isnt some kinda sign :(

I also wouldnt be too sure on any government saying "agriculture will save us, lets not tax em too much"... I would say they will be more "agriculture seems to be doing ok, lets try to get more money out of em, keep the repo man away for another day..."

On the FG website there is a 25 page document called "The Green Food Island" specifically for agriculture

I haven't read it yet but from their manifesto they are:
    • committing to continuing Stock Relief
    • NO land tax
    • No further carbon tax increase on agri diesel

Thanks Tipp man. I searched the site for "agriculture" and it returned nothing.

I had a skim through that doc there, and I dont see where it says No land tax? I can see the stock relief and the carbon tax bits all right. Out of all of em, this is prob the one am most interested in... Must have a better read of it tonight, before the big day tomorrow...

Note : This wasnt an anti-FG or pro anyone else post, its just my preference was to look at their agriculture policy.
