    Hello,

I am curious to know whether it is possible for a corporate body to
own a dental practice? My understanding of the Dentists Act 1985 is
that it applies to dentists only but I am wondering is it possible for
a company/corporate body to own or incorporate a practice, employing a
dentist who would be responsible to patients. Are the business of
dentistry and the practice of dentistry distinguishable? Any
information on this would be greatly appreciated.

The corporate dental clinics set up service companies whos business it is to supply the clinic, equipment, staff to dentists. The dentist in these clinics are not limited and pay te service company for the use of the clinic, as this is illegal. The dentists act is a bit of a dinosaur and a new act is due soon. The legal standing is abit hazy ATM but it doesnt seem to stop companies. It would be interesting is a patient tried to sue a chain of clinics, would they sue the dentist (who could be long gone) or the clinic? I dont know. Boots tried it in the UK nd have since closed down.
