Its a known issue. It is over heating. My friend's did that, he sent it back, they replaced the fans, and now it is fine.

    The fans??

But er, yeah, never happened to me. When using it heavily, the battery area will heat up, but it's never shut down on it's own.

There are fans in the HTC desire?

    He obviously means heatsinks. relax.

I noticed mine also heats up a lot, especially when charging.

Not fans, I meant heat sink. It was early when I replied. ;)

The motherboard needs to be replaced. Happened mine, contacted HTC and they arranged collection via UPS (bit of an ordeal). Took about a week, most of that was due to standard collection and delivery tariff so 2/3 days each way.

    All working fine now.

Word of warning, when booking it in with HTC they will ask if you have already done a factory reset, they won't take it back until you do (you have to do this anyway to clear all personal information off of the handset before you send it back). Also, when they email you your ticket number make sure it begins with IEC and not GB (for obvious reasons) as this will confuse UPS when they are arranging collection.

You should receive 2 emails from HTC, first contains a ticksheet that you fill in, the second should be a UPS barcode to stick on the package going back. If you don't get the barcode (which I didn't) then you need to contact HTC again and ask for the manual instructions to be sent to you. The plus of the manual instructions is you can send the package back "Priority" mail so it will be with HTC the next morning (pre 9am :D)

    Best of luck.

Thanks for all the answers folks but I was wondering if I could pass back the problem to Carphone Warehouse since its only a few months old. Also cant do without a smartphone while it gets fixed as I need it for work ,whats the chances of getting one of them on load or are they able to tell me to feck off

They'll probably tell you to fek off. But you should really confirm first if it is a heat issue - you should be able to tell easily by just touching the part of the phone near the battery. If it shuts down at any time, even once, without being hot - I'd say it's not the same issue people are saying here.

I had an issue where this phone was turning itself off a number of times randomly every day. I eventually found out it was because of a loose sim card connection. It still happens now and again. I make sure the sim is securely in place and have not had an issue since.

Known motherboard issue as stated above, contact HTC, don't bother with retailer, wont have a clue

I agree. It'll just take longer going through the retailer, or they might send you to Fonemenders.
