What's this 750 million paid 2 weeks ago, out of guarantee, not related to the EU/IMF agreement, that VB is going on about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,696 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

I think Vincent likes Mary Lou, he's tearing strips off everyone else.

It was subordinated Anglo Irish bonds. No state guarantee, far below depositors and senior bondholders in the pecking order, but still it was paid. They should have been told to whistle for their money and they got every cent.:mad:

I...well, yes. Fianna Fail are bad. I got that memo. Does anyone know exactly what VB is referring to? What is this payment, to who was it paid, when and in what way was it not covered? I get the impression Mary Hanafan didn't know what he was talking about, nevermind how to phrase the answer.

Hannafin lost me there . .

750mil paid to bondholders for no other reason then "it is our obligation". Sorry its not our obligation and the question I would ask is why was this made our obligation as part of the bailout ?

Simple answer is because its in the interest of the EU that bondholders are paid.

So Minister Hanafin, we did actually have some cards to play with the EU in our bailout negotiation and you used them to what . . Protect our corporation tax that the EU had no chance of changing anyways ! !

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the kind of whimsickle "negotiations" that have been going on in the backround, between the self vested EU "partners" and our lame ass negotiators afraid of their lives to kick up a fuss on our behalf. .

It was covered and talked about in the papers and on forums at the time

That Nazi thing was a bit close to the bone!! I'd say there will be some comment on that tomorrow,

Yeah Vincent.s pulling no punches tonight ,I thought he destroyed Mary Hannafin and Trevor Seargent and wasent very nice to the Fine Gael guy either, he did give a lot of time to Mary Lou but then much of what he has been saying all along is basically what Sinn Fein are saying now, I can see how they would get on considering their paralell views.

RBB is prone to some slight exaggeration at times - his estimation is a little on the high side. On a poor day the ULA will win 2 - on a very good day the ULA will win 6.

They were given an opportunity to give the Irish People a reason to vote for their party . . Thats not a debate, thats a statement to the Irish People.

Did anyone notice that James Reilly had not got a clue what was in the FG manifesto and VB had to point it out. Or prhaps all the FG's here would rather it is not raised

It's a peripheral issue on wording that vb spent too much time on as he did with sergeant aswell on the junior ministers thing.

well he was if you look at it from a ula point of view.
From a labour fg point of view,60% of people,he's not.

Practically every single claim that Fine Gael and Reilly have made about UHI and the Dutch healthcare system is false.

elabourate please if you don't mind, because on the surface this is one FG policy that I am interested in without knowing much/enough about how the dutch system works

Well Permabear, you won't be having a good day Saturday/Sunday then.

I can't wait for the agitating and very loud opposition voices and nosey buggers that they and SF will be getting elected.
I estimate 6 top chances for the ULA and at least 14 for SF along with at least 3 leftist independents.
The creaky edifice that is the Dail needs a kick in the balls.

At the behest of the ECB, it was paid to unguaranteed bondholders - no moral or legal onus to do so. 3/4 billion euro.
Hanafin ought to be ashamed of herslef lying and spluttering through her teeth last night (oh, it was to protect Irish pensions and credit unions, bull) - great example from a national teacher to the kidz, eh?

For you - maybe - for the Irish working class it would be a very bad day.
Electing somebody like Richard Boyd Barrett, who has repeatedly shown no ability to propose realistic economic policies to the point of being innumerate, is not good for any section of the electorate.

working class? boyd barrett has never had a job in his life. most of these ULA crowd are middle class eijits who still think theyre in college. Im working class but when i listen to these guys i wonder what plannet theyre on

Wow VB made fools of the FG lad and Trevor Seargeant.

Thought Mary Lou McDonald did very well. If a good chunk of Dublin Central were watching that she could well be elected

The fact that someone proposes economic policies that you do not agree with, does not make them unrealistic.

What is unrealistic is expecting the slash and burn policies of FF/FG/LP/IMF/ECB will lead to anything other than default and disaster for what is left of the Irish economy.

The fact that someone proposes economic policies that would have the country run out of money to pay for basic services is unrealistic though.

Thats a point 80% + of the electorate get thankfully

To clarify these were senior (but yes unguaranteed) bondholders. And yes, I'm sure it was done because the ECB insisted it be paid.

I have opinions on this (as in whether it was necessary) but staying on topic I'll agree that Mary Hanafin's response was dreadful and completely unprepared. Lying?... Well not exactly. One can say obligation without it meaning legal obligation, and indeed VB tried to press this point and she kept... I think the word might be obfuscating...

I think she might be given some credit if she had just clearly said that while there was no legal requirement to pay the money, a default could not be done without EU agreement, because it could have had serious consequences, and so painful as it was it just had to be done. However, her response was embarrassing and cringe inducing...

    Ix.
