Going through the summer release schedule for next year (as it currently stands) and... well... take a look:

    May 6th: Thor
May 20th: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides
May 26th: The Hangover 2 AND Kung Fu Panda - The Kaboom of Doom
    June 3rd: X-Men - First Class
    June 10th: Super 8
    June 17th: Green Lantern
June 24th: Cars 2 AND Rise of the Apes
July 1st: Transformers - Dark of the Moon AND Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts [definite counter programming])
July 8th: Zookeeper (Sandler, Kevin James, Cher, Stallone.)
July 15th: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 AND Winnie the Pooh
July 22nd: Captain America - The First Avenger
    July 29th: Cowboys & Aliens
    August 3rd: The Smurfs
August 12th: Mr Popper's Penguins (Jim Carrey)
August 19th: Conan AND Spy Kids 4 - All the Time in the World
    August 26th: Final Destination 5

    Logjamming - Check!
    Superhero Fatigue? - Double check!

Anyone want to take bets on which behemoth(s) get hit hard? I think it would be wise for a few of them to push their dates into the winter.

Thor is out in April, no? Are those US dates.

As far as I remember it has always been May, Marvel have a tendency to release movies on the first weekend in May.

Surprised they are not releasing Captain America around the 4th of July to really tap into patriotism though.

Final Destination 5? I thought the whole point of naming it the Final Destination was that it'll be the last.

It's like the default pic knew what face I'd make once I found it!

Final Final Destination? Final <squared> Destination? Ugh......But yeah not impressed with this years' line up. Actually none fill me with excitement. Maaaaaaaaaaaaybe Thor and Captain America....but that's pushing it.

    Presuming you mean this year?

Don't most summers have a pretty consistent blockbuster-a-week (mostly superhero stuff) theme? Is this year more packed than usual? I'm not clear on whether the OP is trying to make a point, or just kick off a general discussion about the summer season.

to be honest half those films wouldnt bother me if i seen them

I think Thor may benefit from being one of the first out of the gates. I think Cap and GL may suffer due to both being released within pretty congested dates (but personally Cap looks really good to me so far so hopefully it'll succeed).

I'm worried about X Men after the first trailer, I thought it looked decent and nicely enticing without giving too much away, but it may suffer from being so sensible.

And wtf at there being another Final Destination! :pac:

Out of that bunch, I reckon the ones that will benefit most and probably rake in the most cash will be Thor & Captain America, mainly due to the whole tie in with the Avengers and the success of the Iron Man movies could play a major part in the success of these.

Transformers 3, Hangover 2 will also have major success due to the popularity of their predecessors. Tha same could be said for Pirates....but I think 4 is a bit overkill.

I would also like to see the Green Lantern do well, but think it might suffer a bit as it is not as well known as the likes of other superheros, but I'm sure Ryan Reynolds might get the ladies attention :p.

The Thing is a prequel, not a remake.

It's a hell of a packed Summer. And I'll go to see most of those. I'm guessing I won't enjoy a lot of them, but some do seem fairly promising.

Screw 2011, it's 2012 I'm excited about. The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, a culmination to a decade of superhero cinema.

Every year someone posts a list trying to show how this year is the year of blockbuster cack. I guarantee there will be about a dozen great films this year that are not summer blockbusters.
People need to stop taking the cover of Empire magazine as the be all and end all of movies.

It's scary how eager some people are to write off an entire years worth of cinema based on nothing more than the fact that they are summer blockbusters. Far too many people moan about the "death of cinema" from remakes and sequels. Horror and genre fans are the worst for it, you'll read page after page or complaining about the lack of original genre films yet Nightmare on Elm Street will still open to tens of millions while a film such as Drive Angry opens to peanuts.

I mean we're only in the second month of the year and we've had The Fighter, Black Swan, The King's Speech and True Grit to name a few off the top of my head. All of them are getting absolutely rave revews.

All joking aside, it'll be a year like any other.

Quirky, unpredictably good or bad movies in March and April (think 300, Kick-Ass, Shutter Island, I Love You Phillip Morris, in the past few years, etc). Blockbuster season from May through August, with scraps and comedies in September (anything that doesn't need a release over here within a week of its state-side release). Leftovers in November and the starting of Oscar season in December.

It's pretty much the same as usual.

There is plenty of time over the summer to go catch them all if your so inclined. From that list I can see that I'll be spending a fair amount of time at the cinema.

One of those listed, Rise of the Apes, has been pushed back till November I think.

Er I think you’ve completely missed the point.
I wasn’t posting a list of movies with regard to how great/bad 2011 summer looks.

I was pointing out how log jammed the summer months becoming + how cluster ****ed the whole thing is.
Box office returns on certain movies will needlessly suffer because of studios unwillingness to give up their summer release dates.

    That was my original point.

FYI, I don't read empire.

Thats just the late 2010 Oscar-bait when they have cleared through its going to be a wasteland until next late Autumn and the Oscar-bait for 2012!

Ah, gotcha. Generally when people say clusterf*ck they are implying that it's all gone to potty.
