Med 1 form question

I am in process of sorting out receipts for the med 1. I have receipts from 2009 and 2010. Can anyone tell me do I have to do a separate form for 2009 and 2010 or can I add the 2 years together and apply on the one form?

    Thanks

Strictly speaking it's one form for each year, but I have, from time to time, included expenses from one year in another year's form. I do make sure that this doesn't change the actual relief due.

If Revenue ask for receipts, which is quite common, I always have my excuses planned!

Use a form per year, you're only making more work otherwise and possibly jeopardising funds!

Can you claim tax back for the previous 4 years, 2010,2009,2008,2007.
Would the chemist be able to give a statment for the amount paid for each year?

    1) Yes

    2) Probably - though you might have to ask him nicely - after all you should have kept the payment dockets you got with each lot of drugs.

Anything from a chemist would be under the Drug Refund Scheme which is a totally different process altogether.

i got my local chemist to print out a list of all prescriptions in a year. i submitted this as proof toward my prescriptions claim. depends if you use the same chemist all the time and how their system is setup.

That's not so - the drugs payment scheme doesn't cover the first €100 or so per month (I don't have the precise figure to hand), and those unreimbursed amounts go onto a Med 1. The chemist will know the monthly amounts.

Just to clarify, will i be able to claim back tax on money paid outside of the drugs payment scheme?

If you have incurred expenses on drugs that cannot be reimbursed then you may claim a credit on a Med 1 form.

    Why do you need excuses?
If you don't have the receipts then you shouldn't be claiming

Please excuse my total ignorance here.
If someone only pays say €50 a month on a repeat prescription, are they entitled to anything back from the revenue as it's less than the amount covered on the drugs payment scheme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭nompere

If you pay nothing because the drug payment scheme covers everything then you get no tax relief. You only get tax relief on the expenditure you actually incur.

    Seems fair enough!

But the drugs payment scheme doesn't cover the first €100 or so per month so person doesn't get anything back off them for €50 a month spent on a prescription.

If you pay €50 per month you get tax relief on €600. That's worth €120.

Thank you nompere. Jesus, I really am ignorant then. I've being paying that every month for the past 5+ years & didn't realise I was entitled to anything.
Better go get a med 1 form then.

Sorry for bumping this thread but have 2 questions regarding the med 1 form.

I am married and we have €2000 med expence from 2011.
My wife is lower tax bracket and I am high tax bracket.

We can both clame for these med expences therefore

    a) Does it matter who clames this or is the rate the same regardless of what band you are on

    b) What are the tax back % rate(s) or how much would we recieve from this €2000

    Thanks in advance

    You'll get 20% of €2000. That's €400.
