Help with diet

    Hi there,

    I've recently cut out an obscene amount of chocolate from my diet (min 5-6 bars a day) and now I'm trying to eat more healthily.

    Wondering if anyone could help me with the remainder of my diet?

    Breakfast - usually 2 weetabix, sweetener & skimmed milk or Elevenses cake bar and a banana

    Lunch - tuna, cheese & tomato sambo, yogurt & fruit or salad (boiled egg, beetroot, coucous, potato salad and tomato) with small roll (no butter)

    Dinner - low fat ready meal with veg or fish, potatoes and veg or pasta with tom sauce

    snacks - orange yogurt rice cakes (3) and ginger oatcakes (3) or tesco "light choices" biscuitty/wafer things? :)

    I don't eat any meat but some fish. I also don't get home until 11pm 3 nights a week. I have tried eating my dinner at lunchtime but it doesnt work as I am starving again by 7pm...

    Are you trying to lose weight?
    One comment I would make is having a ready meal for dinner. Could you perhaps cook from scratch? You'd get a healthier meal this way. Maybe if you're tired or short of time you could prepare a few meals at the weekend and freeze them.

    Hi there, well done on trying to lose weight. I'm trying to tone up and get fitter myself so I know how hard it is! :D

    I would say you're eating too much bad processed food- the Elevenses bar, yoghurt rice cakes and 'low fat' ready meals are all crap. Eat more natural whole foods- fruit, veg, some grains, protein etc. I have porridge and a boiled egg for breakfast and find it keeps me full the longest out of all the breakfasts I've tried.

    Cutting out carbs altogether has always been a bit drastic for me, but I do try to limit them, and not have some form of bread or potatoes with all three of my main meals. For something sweet you could try fruit and yoghurt? I like berries (you can buy a 500g box of berries in Tesco for ~€2) mixed with Greek yoghurt after my dinner. Fat isn't bad!

    So yeah basically I would try to fill up on fruit, veg and protein first, and then limit my intake of carbs. Best of luck!

    Am gonna try and make a better effort to cut out some of the processed stuff. It's 10:30pm now and I'm just in and I have a huge tuna salad with tomatoes, onion, peppers and balsamic in front of me!:D

    Sorry but have to have the yogurt rice cakes..I "pretend" that they are choc and need that as have cut huge amont of my diet..;)..well if it stops me from eating 6 bars a day its all good..haha

    I dont eat meat so find it quite difficult to eat alot of protein to be honest. I try and get quorn into some of my meals and the odd piece of fish, but thats about the height of it..prob why I eat alot of carbs?

    I HATE porridge..haha..would really like to love it but nope not gonna happen....

    any more suggestions for "snacks" as these seem to be my downfall..how about carrots and peppers with low fat hummous? Is that healthy? I LOVE hummous...:P

    Don't overdo it!!! You will sufer from withdrawal symptoms. I lost 5 stone by making incremental changes. You have to eat food you like!!!!

    if your in need of protein i would recommend hemp seed full of protein

    If you have the money get your self a juicer it gives you loads of energy and for some reason i seem to eat less after a good juice

    my fav

    2 apples
    2 carrots
    1 lemon or lime
    ginger
    Greens

    Your nearly getting your 5 a day in one glass, good luck

    OP, is it just that you don't really like meat that you don't eat it? I'm guessing it's not for ethical reasons, seeing as you eat fish. You definitely need to eat more protein. If you genuinely can't bring yourself to eat meat then you need to increase the amount of pulses and hard cheeses you eat. Make sure you eat plenty of dark green veg too, to keep your iron levels up.

    As for hummous - make your own. It's as easy as hell and way, waaaay better for you than the pre-made stuff, which can be shockingly high in fat and is packed with salt.

    Don't get a juicer. You are just concentrating your sugar intake without getting the fibre.

    Just eat lots of fruit you like!!!

    A juicer will separate the juice from the fibres. This separation is fundamental to the juicing process and its associated health benefits. The separation of juice from fibre means that the body does not have to divert large amounts of energy to the process of digesting the juice, as there are no fibres to breakdown. It also means that the body can easily absorb the nutrients present in the juice extracted by the juicer as they have all been released from the fibres and are freely available.

    For someone like the OP who's trying to lose weight, surely a large reduction in the amount of calories used for digestion would be a BAD thing? :confused:

    That is orangebud's point. Using a juicer would mean that the calories used in digesting fruit would not be used.

    OP - a snack idea that helps me.

    Once a week, I get lots of veggies (left overs sometimes) like carrots, celery, turnip...basically anything. Boil it up in some organic veg stock. Add some herbs, pepper, maybe some chilli - experiment to taste.

    Sometimes I also add some chopped tomatos....

    Once its all boiled up, i.e veggies are soft I let it cool and then chuck it a blender. It keeps in a tupperware for the week in the fridge. Its so handy, pour some out and zap in the microwave. Great when you come in from work, you're cold and tired and want something quick. You can add some mixed beans as well after blending for extra fibre and energy. ;)

    If you need protein you could have a protein shake with some of your meals. Like make a shake and use it for the milk in your weetabix. Will keep full for longer.
