Anyone been to Mendoza and have some suggestions for a horseback trek and a winery tour? Don't mind if we do the winery tour on a bike, by private driver or in a bus as long as its not too expensive - I have checked out some companies for the winery tours and they seem to be charging about $160 per person which seems quite expensive but im not sure what the going rate is?

Would we be better to wait until we are there and book via the hotel we're staying in (Sheraton) or do you need to book in advance?

Hi, have no advice about the horseriding, but 160 seems way too much for the winery tour, I assume that wasn't by bike. We just took a bus out to the wine region (sorry, forgotten the name just now but it's in the guidebooks) and the bus driver dropped us off at some guy's place, turned out he was a former bus driver, so he was just looking after his own! I can't remember how much we paid (not being very specific here I know) but it was way less than the above. We just got the bikes and map and cycled from place to place. Then when we handed back the bikes the guy invited us for more wine so we ended up staying a few more hours.

I was in Mendoza 3 years ago as a backpacker. No experience of the horse riding but did a winery tour. There were multiple tours to chose from in every hostel (I'm sure hotels are the same) which were booked through the reception desk.
I'm sure we paid no more than 20 dollars for a half day bus trip to a couple of wineries and an olive oil factory. 160 seems ridiculous, even for a full day with food included. Definitely wait until you're there. There will probably be lots more choice and local recommdations to chose from.

I was there about 3 years ago too and agree with what emer b has to say - even if it is double the price its still great value and a great tour. Wait till you arrive - if you are spending a few days in Mendoza (and you should) you should be able to find space on one of the many tours.
