    Hi,

I was wondering does anybody know where I could get my wheels alined for my Audi A4, the car is lowered and sits about 10 inches off the ground.
Anytime I tried to get it alined the garage's tell me its too low to get the machine under the car to aline the wheels.

I was wondering does anybody else have the same problem or does anyone know where I will be able to get this done?

    Thanks for your help

    It's "aligned".

I doubt anyone has the same problem as your car is clearly not legal to drive . Lowering a suspension like that invalidates your insurance (did you tell your insurance company?) and given you've probably f***ed up the handling and alignment doing this to your car, it is probably not NCT compliant either. Car manufacturers configure a car the way they do for a reason and messing with that has serious safety considerations for you and more importantly other road users.

Can you not just bring a few planks of wood with you - lay them in front of the ramp to give you some extra clearance ?

Plenty of ppl lower their cars - nothing wrong with it. Next you'll be saying that putting on bigger wheels makes a car dangerous. Once the lad is using decent springs/coilovers and hasnt done anything stupid like cut the springs to lower it -I dont see a problem.

Hahaha thanks man I needed a good laugh to distract me from the misery of college projects.

Anyway 10 inches clearance isnt bad so I'd imagine that driving up on a few planks or something to ramp up the car should do the job.

Noticed I spelt it wrong after I posted it.

I Only asked a question and was wondering had anyone else had this problem. Wasn't looking for your opinion on if it was legal or not. I know Gay Byrne is head of the road safety authority but didn't know he was on boards.
By the way the car is legal and has pasted the nct twice.

    Thanks for all other suggestions.

My car is lowered.. 318is.. Not sure of exact height from ground but i had wheels aligned in square fit in Tallaght..

So my car is lowered with Bilstein B6 shocks and springs.. Sh*t my car must be unsafe.. Its ruined the handling.. jesus it could fall apart any minute.. Must goe on to the NCt centre and inform them the passed NCT cert they provided at the last test is Invalid...

There is no problem if its done properly but the vast majority of lowered cars I see are not, cut or heated coil springs are one problem incorrectly fitted coil overs are another it also f***s up the steering geometry not just the wheel alignment but also the castor and camber all of which has an effect on handling and stability. as I said if done properly ther's no problem but cars like that are few and far between and as fro quoting an nct pass that means nothing.

    Lot of assuming there no?

You clearly are not in a position to remark about his car, when you have no idea what he has done, or to what standard.

Also, how do you know he hasn't declared his mods to the insurance and is fully insured.

I wasn't remarking particularly about his car rather cars I have seen coming through the workshop that have been lowered and I have only seen one or two that have had relay good jobs done the rest vary between being suicide machines and just badly done its just my observation over the years

    How much is it lowered?
If it is significantly lowered, you wont get a proper alignment on it as the camber will be outside the allowable limits. You would need to buy adjustable arms to replace the standard ones on the car to fix the camber issue.

Perhaps the people doing the alignment dont want the hassle of trying to get a good alignment on something that it going to be outside factory specs and also dont want you coming back saying its eating tyres (which it will if significantly lowered without camber being rectified).
I would have alignment specs for your car if that is any help.

I use the one in Blakes cross on the old N1 they had no problem with my car, and from what ive been told they deal with alot of track day cars which tend to be fairly low but mickdw is right if it is lowered a fair bit you will need camber control arms fitted to get the best results. Though a touch of negative camber can be a good thing it would be better to have it done right

As for Micdug, i wouldnt pay any attention to him, not one positive word from him, the kinda thing we could do without in the motors section

Wow what a silly misinformed post! sounds like you are reading straight from the 'don't do that' book of Irish-ness.

If you don't have a clue on the subject matter then don't contribute.

Personally i have significantly lowered a car - it improved the handling no end,the alignment was spot on never one bit of uneven tyre wear over thousands and thousands of miles - passed the NCT - my insurance company loved it - high end suspension manufacturers spend as much time as most car companies on R&D and i'm quitely confident they too configure my lovely shiney coil overs with my safety in mind and more importantly the safety of the children...other road users.

OP 10 inches does not sound lowered to me!
