Have this laptop a few years now and this is the first bit of trouble it has given me. When i go to turn it on, it powers up, i can see d screen lite up but no splash screen. when i say the screen lites up i mean you can see a screen if room lights are turned off. the power button is on and the harddrive status light flashes as if its doing something. then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I tried hooking up an external monitor to the monitor out port but that stays on stand by. I can only turn off the laptop by keeping the power button pressed? is the screen or Video card goosed?is there any mark on the laptop on the under neath to indicate to me when the laptop was bought? i think it was around 2004/2005?
Many thanks for looking and for any input you may have.
    Kevin

for the external monitor to work you would have to the laptop to output it. Not at home at the moment to check the right buttons but normally it would be FN+ a FXX key. Hope it helps.

I tried that the FN and F8. but no joy. Because there is no splash would i be right in assuming that it may be the motherboard?

    thanks

on startup immediately try pressing and holding the <Fn> key. This *should* get you Diagnostic mode. If that fails you are in trouble I would assume.

looks like fried video card btw no need to press any fn+xx when powering on, 99.9999% of laptops detecting external screen hooked up :)

My M1530 was 3 years old, the warranty was for one year and it died in December.

I got a full refund, as there is an inherent defect in the manufacture of the nvidia graphic chips. Get over to www.nvidiadefect.com and do a bit of reading.
