Black screen on Vista

A friend is having problems with Vista Home Premium on their PC.

When they try to start the PC it will boot fine as far as the password screen. When the password is entered the screen stays black but you can see the cursor which also moves when the mouse is moved. No response trying Ctrl + Alt + Del.

PC will boot fine into Safe Mode and the virus scan is clean. Their Vista CD has gone missing but I have my one. Can I use my CD to run a repair on their PC or will I need their copy of Vista the PC came with? Anyone have a similar problem with Vista or a fix to this issue? Thanks.

    K.

Generally black screen on starup would be a resolution problem, start up again in safe mode and change the resolution to a lower setting

Pretty sure resolution hasn't been changed since the computer was booting normally.

    First things I would try..

    1. Log in with a different profile / username.
    2. Reinstall the graphics driver..

    Problem fixed.

Turned out to be the graphics driver (Intel chipset). Logged into Safe Mode, uninstalled current graphics driver and downloaded both the latest driver from Intel website as well as the previous release. Latest release driver didn't work but previous release did.

Searching for a fix to this problem on the net threw up loads of different fixes, from uninstalling latest Windows Update to editing the registry.
