I was thinking of this ...one of the problems with Ireland is that we don't have enough people ..if our population was 20 million it would solve lot of our economic problems and make services cheaper due to economies of scale.

We had about 8 million back in the 1840's and look what happened then.

Or why has it worked for Holland?...for this to work as cure for a countries economic ills the said country has to be a small land mass with a large population which is mostly urban...just imaginer if Ireland had 2or 3 large cities with 5 million people in each

With 20 million people we can become a rich country once again by building houses and selling them to each other and then releasing equity :)

Holland is part of mainland Europe with the infrastructure benefits that implies. Trading partners that are separated by trains and highways, not sea.

Care to explain your reasoning behind this.

By the way if we had a population of 20m at the moment we'd also have a larger national debt now and it would also be to scale of the population.

Why not a land bridge or tunnel to Europe cut the costs of exports and imports.
Build a nuclear power station or two and cut the cost of electricity to the masses

what I want to know... is would they be signing onto the dole?

if we can't get jobs for half a million... where are jobs for another 20 million going to come from?

A side of that... Health care as well... hospitals can't handle current population... i assume these 20 million are gonna be invincable?

Why not just build robot armies?

Wasn't this the idea during the early years of the boom ?? Asking the diaspora to come back home.

How did that work out for them ?

True. Things are fine in the Netherlands as long as you live in one of the conurbations. If you're out in the back o' beyond you're as ****ed as you are outside the main cities in Ireland.
