    Xbox controller :P

    I'm with this guy..

Also, some decent exclusives would be nice,
Not to mention maybe taking a few lessons from XBL to make that end of things better.
A better entry point price would be groovy instead of the balls up they made with the PS3.
Proper PS2 backwards compatibility is essential, don't care about PS3 backwards compatibility, not enough games on the PS3 to warrant it yet, while I have over 100 PS2 titles.

But really, the first one is the most important, the 360 has stolen the thunder of the PS3 again and again, not only with exclusives, like PGR4, but also with cross platform titles, so there is no real need to buy a PS3 if they are what you're after, and not only that but if you do buy the PS3 edition of a title, you may end up losing out on DLC, GTA4 and Fallout3 being prime examples.

Also, Sony should ditch the sixaxis nonsense, it just doesn't work and means that even during a really good game some developer feels obliged to stick in a stupid motion sensing segment, Killzone 2 is an example of this claptrap, move on Sony, move on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Cunny-Funt

360 controller woulda been a damn good pad if they didnt make a balls of the d-pad. Its universally considered the worst d-pad to come with a console and for fighting games.

Apart from that, its a solid pad alright. I prefer the way the ps3 pads does wireless and the d-pad/stick layout however. But thats more a personal thing I suppose.

Rumour has it that the PS4 will be 3D. Sony recently had an exhibition with some modified PS3's where you could play MS2 in 3D, looked sweet!

The effect will be lost on me anyway, I can't use those 3d glasses things. Tried many times with 3d images in magazines and a few times in the I-max when it was around. I don't happen to look through both my eyes at the same time even though both are open and I have to close my left eye to look through my right.

Its like wearing red tinted sunglasses to me. I'm a freak I know:D.

OK then, 3D glasses, a balance board and a motion control remote...

I've a bad feeling that the "next" generation of consoles will all try to take from Nintendos book and implement motion control etc., just to gain the "casuals".

Mmm, I wouldn't think that would be a huge thing in four years time. I would say (and hope) the fad will have died out by then.

I want it to talk to me. When I try to play a rival console I want it to say "I'm sorry Red bu I can't let you do that". Then when I say "I'm not Red, I'm Homer" it goes "Gotta go!" and ejects out the window.

    That'd be funny.

Perhaps the PS4 will indeed have 3D support, but not in a goofy polarized glasses kinda way.
The next big thing in TV is to be 3D alright, but one that doesn't require glasses but an arrangement of lenses.
Philips have just such a display up and working,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3tEdVaGkFA&feature=related

In the time it's going to take before Sony have a PS4 ready for launch, expect 3D televisions to be as common as 1080p sets are now, perhaps not in every home but certainly available at a premium in every Argos.

With optional 3D support built into the dev kits and the ability for, certainly the Philips 3D solution, to decode existing 3D methods, namely the polarizing method, we will have plentiful Bluray and game support for such 3D content.

The future should be really really interesting!

Imagine how super sweet Ridge Racer and Wipeout, Killzone and an Ico/SOTC title are going to look in high def 3D?

Looks like fans of Sony PlayStation 3 don’t have any chance in the near future to see the release of next generation of gaming console. In an interview to PC Impress Watch, executive director of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai, while talking about company’s plans, said that the experts at Sony currently are not aiming to develop any next version of gaming console Sony PlayStation 4.

"As regards home consoles, the PS3 was put into business in 2006, and it has a ten year life cycle," said Hirai. He added “This means that we aren't even at the halfway point. There are certainly many more desirable first and third party titles coming out.”

Head of Sony Computer Entertainment expressed the view that the value of the PS3 with every year will only grow. Therefore, the near future PS4 or the other next-generation consoles are not even being discussed. Hirai went onto add that the company is still fully focused on the PS3 and “Right now, I appeal to you to think of the PS3 and NGP as a new, co-operative partnership.”

Although many gamers may be disappointed by this remark by Hirai, at the same it can’t be regarded as a big surprise – as many analysts, publishers and developers are confident that this generation of Sony PlayStation PS3 will last longer than any other device in the gaming industry as hardware has arrived at such a level that is sufficient to meet all the present day and any eminent requirements of gaming software.

I was only discussing this with a friend last night. I honestly don't know what the next generation of consoles is supposed to offer to vastly surpass the current generation?

    Hologram support maybe?

Might get some flak from this, but thank god!

There really isn't much more they can do with a dam console and they should stop trying and start working harder on better game development

I am 100% happy with my PS3 for another good few years to come

Would rather wait a while till they pull the trigger on the next gen. Also, I think the general downturn on the world economy, will also make them hold off, for a while yet. In the mean time, we do have the 3DS and the NGP to look forward to.

I too am enjoying the current console. Would only like to see the following.

    1. Revamped controller - for some reason I actually really like the heft and feel of the 360 controller in my hands, not just trigger placement but the whole 10yrds.

    2. Please please please let me play my back-catalog of games - just picked up a PS2 but seems a shame.

    3. Better games - for some reason I am enjoying playing games more on the 360 - maybe in part due to the controller - but for some reason it just seems to fit right now. Partly though I can share these games with my bro - high pricepoint of the PS3 put it out of reach of many friends/family, they went the 360 route and are not stuck there. Also with the loss of backward compatibility I ended up getting their old games as they moved on.

    4. Did I say better games :)

Until TV 3-D without glasses becomes mainstream I think I will lay off the likes of Killzone - but who knows.
Holographic? - What about VR :)

10 year life cycle doesnt mean that the next console comes out in 2016, it means that sony support the ps3 until then

sony are still supporting the ps2

How can people say there's not much room to improve on the current generation when the vast majority of games are still barely able to run at 30fps with a resolution of 720p?

    Yeah... Games, not consoles

The PS3 is well able to display at better standards

As long as they run at 30fps or better i don't mind the res too much if it looks good overall, I'd rather look at uncharted than some 4k PC game if I'm 6+foot away from the screen.

    Power is a given.

The PS4 will probably run ps2 games as the power will allow it to be done well with an emulator.

The NGP was shown to be capable of using PS3 PSN games like wipeout well so this could mean that PSN will stay with us and our stuff.

Aye, they could announce a new console before the end of the year and still be telling the truth about the 10 year lifespan.

I don't see Sony or MS being in a hurry to launch a new console though. With the way the world economy still is and the fact that they're both making money now I can see no reason why they'd change that. Both have launched products to extend the life of the console and from what I've read it seems to be going fine. Not brilliant, but fine.
Unless one or both of them see a massive drop-off in sales and a correlated rise in PC gaming they won't be hurrying to bring out a new console. And let's be honest, a huge amount of console gamers aren't going to migrate to a new platform at a fairly high cost for slightly improved graphics unless all their friends are doing the same. Development won't be shifting away from consoles for a while yet and when developers do start bitching and threatening is when things will change. That said, many are still happy with the DS so graphics obviously aren't everything. :pac:

Neither of the consoles will be able to manage 1080p @ 60fps for the vast majority of games though, therein lies the issue.

In fairness, 6ft is a fair distance to be sitting away from the screen. Do you have a 42" or something? :o

i reckon we're going to see the first next gen home console announced at the end of this year, or at e3 next year for release 12 months later

if its e3 next year, that'll see a 2013 release which would be well in line with both companies' claims that they want 10 year life cycles

The ps3 was May 2005 and released November 2006, i don't think the length will be that long as mostly the consoles need more power and while motion controls are not everyone cup of tea both kinect and move should be carried on and improved.

    55" :D

Kinect has a 3.9–11 ft limit and even at 4 foot larger resolutions don't improve graphics too much, and the difference between 1080p and 720p at under 30ish inch screen is not huge or easily noticeable.

the real ace up the sleeve of both sony and ms is that both their motion control peripherals will be forward compatible - and tbh i think they were both very much built with the next generation in mind. similar to the original xbox live being a tester for the next gen version that came with the 360 i think theyre giving devs a bit of time to sort out implementation of the controls within their games before pushing out a new generation of console for them to be used with

The big problem for Sony next gen is that Microsoft will probably beat them to market, again. There has been talk of a 2012/2013 Xbox next gen announcement and you'll bet your bottom dollar that MS will want to win the race to soak up market share, just like they did with the 360.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

im not entirely sure sony will let that happen tbh. id say that if ms beat them to the punch with an announcement, we'll see a sony one coming out pretty soon after it

and Sony won't have the next gen of storage unlike the PS2 with DVD and the PS3 with Blu-ray
they could go down the SSD route which would reduce the size of the console but they would want to come down in price more as well

Pioneer had a 16-layer Blu-ray at 400GB being tested and the Blu-ray Disc Association have created the BDXL standard with quad-layer 128GB Blu-ray discs that can be bought now if mainly for commercial storage rather than any media use.

Sony and Panasonic plans to increase the storage capacity on their Blu-ray Discs from 25GB to 33.4GB per layer via a technology called i-MLSE. The higher-capacity discs, according to Sony, will be readable on current Blu-ray Disc players with a firmware upgrade. No date has been set to include the increased space, but according to Blu-ray.com "it will likely happen sometime later this year." http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3977

Last July Sony and the Japanese Tohoku University announced the joint development of a blue-violet laser, which will help in creating Blu-ray discs with a capacity of 1 TB with 2 layers.

Sony have will have no issue with space, MS may have a problem as i don't think download speeds are going to be fast enough for enough people to make a new digital only xbox feasible in the next year or 2(Ireland is bad but the US is not that great either).

Not a PS4 but, Sony is apparently meant to release brand new PS3 models that will be resistant to current hacks. One of the new models will allegedly boast a 300GB hard drive and cost £186.99 in the UK where the rumor originates from.

A stock-wide price cut is said to be on the horizon, with Sony hoping to clear out old models and make way for the new one and to improve security before the Chinese release of the PS3.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

should be plenty of price cuts on all formats this year. the wii is scheduled to drop to $99 in q3 over here, and the xbox 360 arcade should follow suit, though perhaps not quite as cheap

Oddly enough I'd go even further and say, generally speaking, it's recommended you have a 40" to notice the difference between 1080p and 720p. That, however, is at recommended viewing distances only and I'd imagine most people sit closer to their TVs than that. It's an even bigger issue if you're using your PC monitor as your console gaming screen and so sitting right in front of it - it's far more noticeable. That being said, I'd still prefer to see higher resolutions than poxy 3D being the driving force behind change in the next gen of console.

Of course, it's not just resolutions which could change. The ability to implement a higher standard of AA at lower resolutions would be nice, again something lacking in the majority of current-gen games.
