Dublin to Galway Cycle - hybrid bike recommendation

    Hey everyone,

I will be participating in a Charity Cycle from Dublin to Galway in 2 months time. As a fairly unfit, novice cyclist, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good hybrid bike (preferably in the €300 - €350 range) that would be suitable for the cycle and also for training on before that time.

I know that a Road Bike would probably be faster but for long term use I think maybe I would get better value from a Hybrid.

All advice welcome, thanks a million in advance.

    :D

Dublin to Galway is a long distance - get a road bike - your arse and wrists will thanks you!

Thanks for that - just wondering - would most other experienced cyclists agree with Chakattack? (all sugggestions welcome)

I did a bit of research on road bikes yesterday and they seem fairly expensive and cost slightly more than I was hoping to spend. If anybody has any recommendations of a decent second-hand shop in Cork it'd be greatly appreciated.

If you're doing Dublin to Galway in one go it might be painful on the wrists. But you can put bull horns or whatever they're called on the end of your handlebars to get a more natural position. The Giant Rapid comes with them.

Road bikes get recommended here because alot of people (me included) started on a hybrid, moved to a road bike and would never go back to riding a hybrid. Other people have converted their hybrids into roadbikes (which isn't as cheap a conversion as it may appear).

Did a 175k spin on a hybrid last autumn. Doable, but get decent padded shorts and butt cream. You'll have a sore arse anyway, but less sore. Personally, I didn't find wrists to be a bother. I'm still on the hybrid and still like it, but the consensus is that a road bike is a far smarter buy. €300-€350 seems very tight even second hand, as you will need a number of extra items such as the shorts, gloves and helmet, which all add up very quickly.
