Screen blanks when power connected

I've got an old Dell laptop, almost ancient at this stage. Problem has cropped up tonight, that the screen goes blank when I plug the power into it. The contents are still there, just really faint. To get normal brightness back, I need to power off, plug off, and reboot. Plugging the power in again once its booted causes…

Anyone any idea whats going on here?. I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that when the power is removed the screen gets very flickery, so I've been thinking that there screen is on its way out, but the way it is now makes no sense to me.
