DS Lite Query

    Hi

My daughter has a DS Lite that has gone thorugh 2 card readers in the past 3 months. Is this a common problem with the DS lite? I would have thought that the card reader is a pretty simple device that should not give trouble especially as the Sd cards can only be installed the 'right' way. Anyone have a similar issue with the DS Lite and any way to reduce this problem?

Bty Im going to show my ignorance here and ask seek to confirm that there is no difference between a DS Lite and DS reader, i.e. the SD cards are the same for both.

    Thanks

The DSi is the only one with an SDcard slot. Not ds lite.

What do you mean buy a card reader? ... Perhaps you'll want to question whoever you are buying them from.

    Probably talking about a flashcart.
Flashcarts are illegal now I think.

Imagine my concern when I read that Im involved in an illegal activity - or actually my daughter is!

I can assure you Im not and I refer to the caveat in my op which admitted to my ignorance to all things technical. I had a look as the DS Lite and there are 2 slots - one a large tray like slot and the second a small spring loaded slot. The latter is the one which has had to be replaced twice in 3 months. The instruction next to it is "insert card" - hence my reference to a "card reader" - its nothing more sinister than that. This card reader has little spines at the back which seems to get damaged when the "card" - or whatever the technical term for the yoke that's loaded into this slot - is inserted or removed. I have taken it to 2 different guys each time with the same result - a new card reader which costs between €40 and €45 to replace.

I was just wondering if anybody has the same problem and if there is anything that can be done to minimise the possibility of it happenning again?

    Thanks again

If its the slot where the DS card goes that looks like:

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSdKR-tLEHEwzWFgyKYLpTa2LGV6N5_R-gGzftLWMaLKjHGzg5f

To minimise it happening, make sure your little one push the card in to get it out if you know what I mean. My kids had a habit of just pulling the card without worrying about the spring loaded push in thing!

The other slot is for Gameboy Advance games.

If its the top of this thing:

then its a flash card you are talking about, and not allowed on this forum. Legality or otherwise of them is grey area and not worth repairing, just buy a new one.

Since its the second time, its probably something shes doing, or perhaps theres another small set of hands messing with it? I keep finding my sons one on the ground charging, and his siblings make a beeline for it when they see it.

Yes that's what Im talking about and I will take note of you advice below to try and increase the life span of the current one.

No i wasn't referring to this gadget although I know people who use them - Im afraid to-date I have stumped up for the official version of the games which compared to what I've heard other say concerning the cost of the device above would appear like day time robbery. But then would you be surprised in this 'little country of ours'!!

Thanks again and hopefully I wont have to replace anything on the DS for some time.

    Oh I get you now.
    They're called cartridges.
No relation to SD cards at all really.

Look closely at how she takes the games out as oaks said, I've never heard of anyone needing to replace or repair the DS cart. slot.

Thanks /Vollog for clarifying that this is not a normal DS failure. It all points to user problems and I'll now have to introduce a mandatory training course on the insertion and removal of the game cartridges.
