Can only assume it is a rumour. There is a (tobacco) smoking ban in most public places (including coffee shops) in Amsterdam however. Last time I was there, a few months ago, tourists were indulging in the coffeshop delights.

This is some political noise made by centre right coalition partners which may eventually result in a tweak to the current system.

The consequences to the city economy of such a ban renders it highly unlikely to materialise as reported.

I'm just back from Holland and the locals think that there will be a ban on tourist indulging themselves at some point. Supposed to be driven by pressure from other EU nations.

It's looking like it will be a potential change in the future, but curently tourists are free to imbibe (subject to normal age restrictions etc).

They've had that law in Maastricht since 2005, there is no problem in any other cities. The biggest problem with the smoking law in Amsterdam is the no smoking in your hotel room law. PITA.
