While looking through a CD with scenic photography, I came across this particular building (photo taken in Co. Mayo).

I've seen the same building near Ardmore.

Any info on what it was/used for/etc please?

+1 was just in Ardmore on Sunday. They were used in the recording all planes and boats passing during World War II.

They are all around the country.

They were used on headlands as spotters, and if something was spotted at sea, a fire was lit notifying the next headland and so forth until the message got around to Dublin.

There was a fire lit at the Brownstown head one a couple of years ago to commerate something or another.

They also have something similiar around Britain, it was on a BBC program called coast. and they could send message from Holyhead to Liverpool quicker then a text message.

THey would have been needed as according to the German invasion plans Operation "Green" the main landings would have taken place somewhere between Dungarvan and Wexford.
