What are reasonable salary expectations?

    Hi there

I'm a software developer working for a small company in Dublin. I've been there for two years now. On a day-to-day basis I program in C++ and C# though it occasionally requires some VB and other scripting languages.

My gross salary is €30k and there is no sign of this increasing. I wouldn't expect to get a raise if I asked for one either. HR procedures in general are very lax in the organisation. I haven't had a review since I started - I now know this has downsides and upsides. I realise that in the current economy, salaries are staying static for most sectors, but I also realise that my experience level is not, and that the IT/Software industry in Ireland has actually grown consistently over the past couple of years despite the economic collapse.

Overall, I'm pretty comfortable in the job I'm in. However, I also want to know that my career as stands has prospects and a future. Any tips on what I should be expecting would be helpful, thanks.

2 years and still on 30K? - Seems a bit small to me. I'd say you should be on 35- 40 anyways? I'm sure if you searched else where you'd get that rate easily.

To be honest, in a lot of the SMEs, that kind of situation sounds like a typical one. The route to a raise in SMEs tends to be by going to another SME for a higher base salary.

Quick question though - you've been there for two years but how many years experience in the industry in total do you have?

I have about 3 years industrial experience. I was made redundant from my first job after college.

It does seem like you increase your salary through moving companies these days, which is not ideal.

40k would seem like the least you should look for, if you are halfway-competent.

I suppose you should look at ads/contact recruitment agents to get an idea of what is paid for similar roles, or for other roles you would be qualified for. Then ask for a raise based on that information and/or apply for other jobs.
