Hotfile has terminated hundreds of accounts for alleged copyright infringement.

    Full story here
Its seems the entire catalogue from sites like Allyoulike has been removed from the Hotfile server.
Good new for the likes of xtravision if this becomes more aggressive.

Not really because people will just move to the next filehost, usenet, torrents etc.

My hotfile account expires today, talk about perfect timing.

great news. there is a huge difference between people sharing files and people sharing files to earn money.

    im against the latter.

It does not actually matter what 'you' think. The people who drafted and enact draconian copyright measures enforce the rules.

The RIAA would like to have a word with you. Fact is, copyright infringement extends to simple sharing between friends, to actual illegal money making practices. In theory, you can be brought to court over something as small as sharing a song. Civil law covers this. Making money, it's likely you would be convicted of a criminal, not a civil offence. Provided you reach their arbitrary level of financial gain. Think it's 500+ dollars in the US on more than 10 copies or something. I think it's crazy what power 'they' have, but the above quote is bad advice imo. Sure, we all accept/think it's statistically unlikely you will be caught, but the risk of a civil lawsuit always remains. Copyright was once designed to protect original works for a certain period of time. Copyright is now a tool used by massive companies to subdue the people. It's not just a case of "don't profit from my work". No, it's now extending to a set of measures designed to control your media consumption. DRM is the result. Hell, it's technically illegal to play a DVD on a Linux computer using libdvdcss/DeCSS due to protective measures on copyrighted material enacted by the DMCA act. Bull**** imo.
