Hello, Can anyone recomend a mechanic who knows their way around the 3.0 Trooper? It doesnt matter whether they work for themselves or for a dealer just as long as they know their stuff regarding the 3.0. Am living in Galway but would travel.

    Thanks in advance.

    Whats the problem?

I have in the past spent a good deal of time working on the 4JX1

There's a good 4x4 mechanic in Cosgroves Garage in Tuam who used to do mine when I had it.

    Thanks for fast replies.
Problem is 50A glow plug fuse blowing. Took out plugs, one dead with evidence of burning, replaced all four. Fuse still blowing. Loom wire from relays to plugs fine. Relays working. Two red/white wires from fuse box to relays seem fine too. No bad/burning connections anywhere that I can see. But 50A fuse still keeps blowing instant the ign is switched on. Put a 60A in and did it smoke:eek:!! Finally it blew too.

So, Ive done all I can and want to brink it to someone who knows the 3.0 trooper. They're great jeeps when they're driving as they should but are very touchy so would prefer to give it to mechanic/garage who has worked on them previously.

There is a plug on the bulkhead near the brake servo.

Did you plug this out and see if the fuse blows?

Yeah Slidey, plugged that out. Also plugged out other grey plug with black+yellow feed to relays. I think it may shorting somewhere along that heavy black+red wire that comes from fuse connection to that plug at servo you mention, but am wary to do much poking in there. One smoking fuse is enough for me:)

Its possible glow relay may be shorting inside but when you swap the glow relay with the after glow relay fuse still blows.

Am determined to get to bottom of it, given enough time...The one thing I never seem to have enough of:(

Ive heard of this problem before and it been the glow plug shorting to the block and blowing the 50A glow plug fuse,What you have to do is take off the intercooler and the foam soundproofing where the wire joins the metal strip over the plugs ,the wires eye end is touching the engine block.

Got it sorted, but wouldnt have guessed it in a million years! You're correct in what you say, but do you know what it was? One of my new set of glow plugs - and genuine Isuzu too not cheapo crap - was faulty and shorting out in head...Which was exactly what the problem was in the first place with the old plugs! Could have bought Blue Print glow plugs from motor factors down the road but heard bad opinions about that make and went for the real thing...and got one duff one!

Isolated each plug individually after my brother told me story of work mate who had glow fuse blowing and garage replaced all plugs and fuse still blowing... after entire day of monkeying around someone wondered could one of the new plugs be faujlty. And one was indeed faulty.
So thanks for all the ideas and suggestions everyone. Much appreciated.

The 3.0 Troopers have such a bad reputation and in a way it isnt really fair. They really REALLY have to be run on fully synthetic 5w30 oil otherwise you are going to have operating problems of all kinds. My own opinion is that people thought they could treat the 3.0 the same way as the 3.1 which would almost run on chipper oil! But 3.0 is far more powerful motor and much better torque than 3.1. When they aare running well they is nothing like them as good.

Thats great ya got it sorted, i would agree the 3.0 is'nt as bad as people make it out, give it the right oil and dont let it get low as the 3.0 relys on oil pressure to work best (easy starting etc). i would rate them as a great 4x4.
