    Hi,

New to the club scene and my club are looking for members for mens teams for 2011. They say they have 6 different teams and I was just wondering if someone could fill me in on the different comps/teams that go on ?

    thanks

Hi and welcome to this crazy game.

Here are the mens catagories as well as I can remember them. All matches to be played off scratch.

Barton Cup - Mens Foursomes low handicaps no limit to how high or low

Bruen shield - Mens foursomes mid handicap lowest handicap 6 with the pairing not to exceed 17

Purcell shield - Mens foursomes high handicap lowest handicap 12 with the pairing not to exceed 27

senior cup - mens singles any low handicap

Junior cup - Mens singles 5 and above

not sure what the 6th is but there's the Fred Daly trophy that's a juvenile competition or the Caroll cup I think is for Seniors (over 50)

Take a look at the GUI website www.gui.ie for more info. Here's a link to the rules: http://www.gui.ie/uploads/docs/2030_Conditions%20Booklet%20(Final)%202010.pdf

quick question...do you have to be in a club a certain length of time before you can play for the team

    No.
But for practically all the competitions you will have to have played a minimum of 4 qualifying competitions in the previous year.
Qualifying comps are the singles ones where your handicap can be adjusted (up or down). If you have moved clubs recently, your new club probably won't have access to your old records so in that case it's up to you to provide the evidence (golfnet printout?) that you qualify.

General points.... the inter-club competitions are run by the province so some of the ones mentioned are just for Leinster... some of them end at the province stage while others have an all-ireland stage after the province.
The tournament conditions linked to above will change (slightly) this year but they are a good guide.
You can only play for one club in any one tournament...

Last but not least, put yourself forward for selection (once you are eligible). Don't wait to be "asked" because that's not how it works. Team managers will be looking for people who want to & can play, especially this year where guys may have problems committing time (off work) to practice etc.
There are plenty of these competitions and in general there will be at least one to suit every handicap...

Inter-clubs are some of the best matchplay days you'll get as a regular joe golfer.

thanks for that licksy...does the eligitability count on your exact or playing handicap ? we play purcell shield and limit is 12 but im 11.7..
also can u pick who your partner is for trying out for the team or does the manager do dat

Playing handicap (so 12 limit on playing, 11.5 on exact) and it's usually based on your lowest handicap last year.
Manager does the managing :) but you could obviously suggest a partner that you're comfortable with for trials etc...

    thanks for the replies guys

I don't think I'll be joining this year to be honest (game needs a lot morw work before I'd have the confidence) but two questions:

    1) How much time/commitment is involved ?
Travel also a factor I guess

    2) Would an 18 handicap typically be playing in comps ?
I see the Purcell is minimum of 12 pairing not to exceed 27 which suggests an 18 can't play. So I'm taking the answer to be no

    thanks

Incorrect. In Bruen the pairing can't be LESS than 17 (I.e. It must exceed 16). Similarly, in Purcell the combined can't be lower than 27.

That's what I was thinking too, over 17 combined for bruen isn't it?

Pedantic mode - can't be less than 17 means must exceed 16
    /gets coat...

I should ignore you as I'd say you know exactly what I meant. In fact my post is correct as handicaps are actually minus figures so to say 'exceeds' is more correct. But to avoid confusion for people like yourself who may not know these things, the combined handicap must be between 17 and I think 24 for Bruen.

There are also some inter-club competitions that are run by clubs rather than the GUI. Of the top of my head I think there's one called the South Leinster run by Carlow? Singles matchplay, h/caps min 16 or 18 or something. Ask around at your own club because there may well be a a competition to suit. Also, if you don't try you won't gain experience :)
