Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation and A Vented Tumble Dryer

    Hi,

Just a quick question. Is it possible to connect a vented tumble dryer directly to a heat recovery ventilation system?

If so then are there any special requirements?

    Thanks

i would not do this as you will end up with a large build up of lint in the system and on the heat exchanger filter.

pity though as the heat recouped would be substantial.

i am not knowledgeable on heat recovery systems btw but very experienced in the output of driers!

the dryer does not need to be vented direct to the HRV to recoup heat. All that is needed is an inlet vent in the drying room. The heat poduced is either drawn to the hrv unit of released to the room. no heat loss there then. More importantly the humid air needs to be adequately exhausted from the room.

It's amazing how much heat is generated by a tumble dryer.
We have an electric condensing model in our utility room, and when it's running, it would heat the house - with the MHRV on full blast!

    Syd,

Can you clarify what you mean here?

If the tumble dryer is in the utility room, do you just let the dryer vent into the room and allow the warm air to be recovered by the HRV extract in the room?

just to clarify im no expert on these things and you should contact a HRV manufacturer / installer... but i dont see a major difference between a drying room and a shower room / bathroom for generating steam to be recopued by the HRV system.

in fact, as has been mentioned previously, i would imagine some real issues from lint in the intak efilters being a problem, and also the fact that the tumble dryer is not designed as an air intake ventilator which could mess with the pressure differential between the intake and exhaust.
