Mk5 Golf, worth a punt?

Hi all, bit of advice needed.

I have the chance to pick up a 2007 VW Golf Mk5 1.4 for 4K.
Its a company car they're getting rid of. It's got about 160K on the clock but would have been regularily serviced, no issues with it I think.

I'm sitting my test on 12th March and this will be my first car. (I'm 23) Insurance quote is for around 1200 - 1500

I was looking at the 1.4 Mk4 before, and by all acounts, its a bit of a boat isn't it? You would need to be looking at a 1.6 for a bit of poke.
Is this still the case with the Mk5? It seems even heavier.

Is the high milage enough to offset the low price?

And am I mad getting an 07 as my first car? SMASH SCRAPE DENT :pac:

4k is not a bad price for it even with 160k on the clock. Maybe get it checked over beforehand. As for 1st car why not.

Tbh for that price I'd be interested. Will be worthless in a few years anyway but you're not losing a lot. For a safe first car there's a lot to recommend it. If everything is ok with it (read engine isn't burning oil) you could do a lot worse.

Agreed. The mileage would put me off a small bit. But if it has been looked after properly, serviced regularily and doesn't have any problems, you could do a lot worse for 4k.

My girlfriend has a 1.4 MK5 golf and I drive it quite often, and for what it is, I can't fault it. Comfortable car, not too slow for a 1.4, hers is a comfortline so has all the creature comforts you could want to :p

Def worth a look for that price, as long as its been looked after.

The base level is pretty grim, but that's a good price.

We had a 2007 1.4 Sportline for a year (still not very well equiped to be honest) and it was really slow but solid.

Just double checked with the company, its actually an 06 1.6 petrol they think. Not sure if its the comfort line.

Front bumper might have a bit of a ding. I'll have a gander later anyways.

    Cheers for the advice lads.

Well that's a very reliable engine if it's looked after. The main worry would be the gearbox. As it's a 2007 is there an NCT?

Is it? Is it a different engine than in the Golf MkIV / Octavia MkI? The 1.4 petrol in the MkIV is a weak engine that uses oil and eats coil packs and even with regular servicing it's pretty amazing it's got to 160k miles.

My Dad has a 1.4 MKV and I have a MKV GTI - anytime I drive his I ask him if there is something wrong with it? Maybe a flat tyre etc:D

OP - For 4k it is well worth it but it is a little sluggish. Remember my first car was a 1.2 Suburu Justy; was a little flyer!

    It's a 1.6 I'm guessing 160000 km being an 07?

The 8v 1.6 is but the 1.4 is a bit hit and miss.

    I think it's worth a shot for €4k personally.

    It's a 1.4 - see OP

I'm with ya on the latter bit of your post. It probably is only 160k km, which is just a bit under 100k miles. Still quite a lot for that sh1tty 1.4

It's a 1.4! See OP. The old 8v 1.6 is old skool and not up to much these days (the shame of VAG to put it into a brand new €40k Audi only a few years ago) but in a bangernomics car for a few grand I would have that engine over any other sh1tty small 4 pot.

    Thanks dude :)

So the advice by all the other posters and the last bit of my post is all good (when you are buying an old car) :)

My dad had that old 1.6 8v engine in the Audi 80 he bought brand new in '91. It had only 71BHP at the time which looks ridiculously low 20 years on. But in fairness it did have adequate poke when driven and revved hard. 0-100km/h in about 14s and a top speed well over 100mph
