I'll be going abroad on coop this June and I want a basic enough laptop to tide me over while I'm gone.

I've never owned a laptop before (only desktops) so I have no idea what's good or bad. I want to be able to go on the internet, do projects, maybe play a little oblivion and web chat.

My first question is what laptop would you recommend for me?

I don't want to spend too much maybe 600 euro tops.

My second question is would you trust sites like DoneDeal and Buy and Sell as good places to buy laptops?

For example is this offer too good to be true: http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/computers/1905626

Or am I just bad at spotting a good deal.

    Cheers,
    :D

Too good? That's priced at what it's worth, 600 is loads for a laptop now a days.

    Go here, www.laptopsdirect.ie

If you want a basic and cheap laptop then don't spend any more than 400. Check elara.ie and dabs.ie for good deals too. If you're traveling, then a netbook might suit better due to size. You should get one of those for 250 easily enough.

I would avoid donedeal and so on. Too many scams, no warranty and no come back.

Hey thanks for the advice :).

Would it be safe to buy a laptop online?

(I've always been afraid that they'd break or would mysteriously disappear ).
Is there any particular brand to go for or to completely avoid?
And what exactly is the difference between a netbook and a regular laptop other than size and memory capacity?

    Quick update:
Would something like this suit my needs http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5084296/Trail/searchtext%3EMSI.htm#tabrev or should I spend a bit more to get more?

    Cheers :D

That is similar to what I use; as long as you only want some surfing, movie watching etc. they are perfectly fine for it and the fact they are small is a benefit for transport.

Would it be ok for using Mircosoft software too?

I got the full office package on mine; as long as you don't want to try to load a big Access DB etc. you should be fine.

Perfect, I won't be using it for any dbs so no worries there :p.

    Thanks for your help :D.
