Hi folks, just wondering what the best app for gps is for the iPhone 4? I believe the iPhone has it's own antenna so it works using the usual gps methods, without a need to connect to the Internet at the time you're driving. I looked on the app store and there's plenty of cheap apps, but TomTom's app (for UK and Ireland) is about 40 euro. Should I buy this or there other good ones around?

Navigon is a good one too. Be careful with some of the cheaper ones though, as a number of them do actually need to connect to the internet to use. TomTom and Navigon don't need to connect, but need a bit of space on the phone as they download the maps to the device at the start in order not to have to use the internet later on when being used, and those maps are quite large obviously.

I use Tom Tom, there a few interesting sides to it; it can navigate to any photos on you iPhone. In Points of Interest, say for instance, you're looking for a restaurant, petrol station shop etc it will give you the option of the app to navigate to it. This is probably standard in most but I find it very handy.

Navigon works great - maps are spot on.

I have Navigon and find it very good. Never had a problem with it getting a gps lock - when I drive out of an underground garage it always get is in less than 5 seconds (generally less than 2).

Depending on your budget I'd recommend getting the Europe version of the maps. I bought the UK and Ireland version of Navigon but the Europe version would have been very handy on holidays in Italy last year. There's no upgrade path to the apps unfortunately.

Keep an eye on the itunes store as Navigon regularly have price reductions. They had one at Christmas and another for Valentines weekend. I got the Ireland and UK version for €21.99. You could also try Appshopper http://appshopper.com/. Its a free app you can set up to alert you for the apps you're interested in.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, very helpful :) Navigon seems to get the nod so. It's 45 euro on the app store right now, but need for Monday so will buy it anyway

I have navigon, can't complain. Used to have tomtom on my old windows phone but navigon for the iphone was always getting the better reviews at the time I purchased it. I prefer the look and feel of tomtom but I've had no problems with navigon since I got it.
