Grad. Dip. Primary Versus B.Ed Primary Teaching.

    Hi Guys,

I would really appreciate if any Mary I student past or present can give me their honest perspective on the differences (positives/negatives) in doing a Graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching opposed to a Bachelor of Education in Primary Teaching.

After completing a degree that I no longer have a passion for (Accounting/Finance 2:2) I am seriously considering in applying for either of these two options.

However, I am slightly sceptical of the Grad Dip, as Im worried that on completion, would a perspective employer/Principal treat me with the same academic standard as a B.Ed?

Also, would I as a Grad. Dip student have the same post graduate opportunities as a B.Ed graduate?

Finally, if anyone is doing the Grad Dip, I would really appreciate advise on its course structure and subjects?

    Le Meas!

    Hi, all.

I'm in the same position as the OP. I was offered a place on the B.Ed programme, but have a prior degree, and am slightly more tempted to go for the Graduate Diploma programme, instead.

Is the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary Teaching) qualification well-regarded by those in the profession, or would the majority of Principals favour those with the B.Ed degree? For anyone who’s done the G.Dip, did you find it helped you sufficiently to get into teaching?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi El Diablo Blanco

I too got offered a place on the B.Ed course in St Pat's and have accepted it! Im chuffed but thats not even half the battle! :D

The reason I chose the B.Ed is because its more valuable in the long run and if there are no jobs in Ireland after graduation, I have only seen international employers looking for B.Eds upwards. Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't seen Diplomas being mentioned.

Also, the B.Ed allows you to study an academic subject which allows you to teach at secondary after completion of H.Dip.

In addition, the Grad Dip is extending to a minimum of 2 years in 2014 which to me devalues the 18 month Grad Dip some what.

There is also the obvious differences of studying less subjects and less TP but I guess it still qualifies you as a Primary Teacher.

I can only offer information from my position, so maybe your position is different.

Anyway let me know what you decide and if I can be of any more help.

Sorry to change the topic somewhat...Can you teach at secondary your degree subject if you qualify with the HDip? I never knew that, could someone confirm?!
