International Drivers license - 100% increase + postage

Last March (2010) I got an international drivers license in order to be able to drive in the states.

Only AA Ireland provides these for us.

Last year this cost €5.08, this also included postage. I am including the application form that was on the AA website last year to apply for this.

I have to apply for a new international license as they expire after a year and need it to again rent a car in the states this March. However the price for the IDP has now increased to €10. You also have to pay a postage fee of €5. You can see this on their new application form: http://www2.aaireland.ie/download/AADrivingPermit.pdf

When I received the IDP (which is just a License translation book with your name, address and license date "hand wrote" into it, and the photo you sent, stuck onto the paper back on the inside), it was posted in an A4 envelope by standard mail. If I remember correctly, The stamps amounted to something around 90c.

This, in my opinion is a pure rip off.

I've rented cars in the U.S lots of times and only ever presented my Irish driving licence. Why are you spending money on something you don't need?

I was told I would need it, and I was also asked for it first time I rented. I rented in Phoenix, AZ.

I just looked on Hertz and chose Arizona as a pick-up location for a car. This is the information on their website regarding driving licences:
An acceptable, valid driver's license issued from your country of residence must be presented at the time of rental. The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period. If the driver's license is in a language other than English, and the rental is in the United States, an International Driver's Permit is recommended. In all cases, a valid driver's license issued from your home country must be provided, whether or not you possess an International Driver's Permit. You will not be allowed to rent a Hertz vehicle with only an International Driver's Permit.

The Fullsize Van requires a Commercial Driver's License to transport non-profit groups or for commercial use. Vehicle may not be used to transport passengers for hire. The Commercial Driver's License requirement does not apply to personal rentals.

Maybe if you are using another company they are looking for an internation driving licence, but it doesn't appear to be a legal requirement.

Your license is in English, you don't need an International Driving License when travelling to countries that speak english.

You also don't need it in any of the EC/EU Countries as its an EC Model license.

They'll even accept a German driving license in the US as long as its a normal rental company and not some back yard cowboy crowd.

An IDL is not a license, its merely a translation of your existing license.

I used Alamo. They asked me for it at the counter.

It does state on the AA website in relation to USA "IDP recommended as, in the event of an accident, some insurance companies will insist on seeing one. " I have the CDW/LDW and SLI with the rental company, so I dunno if they will want the IDP for that.

I don't know how accurate that is, but I wish I posted here before I applied for one again!
