    Hi,

Recently i have been watching a programme on tv about inmates in American State Prisons. There are inmates there who are serving 30+ years for murder and manslaughter and have no hope of being released until the full time is up.

Why in Ireland is an ordinary decent persons life only worth 10 years??
There are prisoners getting out of Jail for murder after only 10 years and some in the legal profession are loving it. Why is this ?? anyone??

That's kind of an unanswerable question. Why is a life only worth 30 years? Why not death? Why not years of torture? How can you measure the value of life in terms of punishment at all? Should killing a criminal attract a lower sentence as his life is probably worth less?
Also what do you mean by saying that "some in the legal profession are loving it"?

Murder is punished by mandatory life in prison.

The minister for justice can release life prisoners on licence. When Michael McDowell was minister he said he would not consider applications for release until 14 years at least was served.

Usually the longest sentences are reserved for people who post on boards.ie without doing a search to see if the topic has been raised before:

This is a very serious issue I dont think you should be making fun of it. You could have sent me PM or something instead of what you have done.
I'm sorry i didn't check to see if the topic was there before but i have to say i think your attitude as an moderator leaves something to be desired.
