What do you need out of a jeep? They're a bit on the old fashioned, slow, cramped side.

mainly just a commuter and everyday veehickle but itll be pulling the odd bike trailer. nothing strenuous.

I really like the look of em and hopefully ill like it when i test drive it on saturday.

As this is my first jeep, im just wondering if theres anything i need to look out for or ask the guy whos selling it?

160bhp in them so wont be slower than the equivalent landcruiser only its 10k cheaper, and landcruisers dont even have arm rests so i cant see them being any more comfortable, maybe you thought he said 97?

Manual or auto? New shape or slightly older one?

some issues with timing chains, not sure it applies to 07 models though

Pajero sport, i.e challenger, the one that came out in the 90s and is based on the old l200
    are they not a 2.5 with 114hp?

Ok. With only 40k on the clock then you should be free of DMF issues for a good while to come. They typically begin to fail around the 100k miles mark so plenty life left in it yet. :D

Timing chain issue as mentioned by snowman is related to the timing chain tensioner. The original version had a habit of being eaten up over time by the chain, and the risk was that the metal bit could fall off and end up being caught by the chain. Mitsubishi updated the part, though I don't know the exact date of this, so next time its getting serviced it might be a good idea to get the mechanic to check it anyway. On older cars they can wear away anywhere from 70-120k miles. Think the part is only something like €20 and supposedly easy enough to change if you're handy with the spanners.

Other than those 2 issues you shouldn't have a whole lot of trouble. As its one of the very last of the old model then all of the issues should have been ironed out before it was built so just your usual checks to be done in regards corrossion, body condition, using all the 4WD options to make sure they engage/disengage smoothly. They're a reliable machine, and if its been looked after then you should have no issues at all. :)

If it has a tow-bar, have a look around the yard to see if you can spot anything that it may have been used for towing.

Just bring a friend/mechanic with you when checking it out - can be all too easy to be distracted by a shiny truck and miss some obvious things. Extra eyes are always valuable. ;)

3.2 isn't going to set your hair on fire as regards performance, but they're still quick enough given the size/weight of them. Also brilliant for towing with plenty of power and very stable. Real world you'll be looking at mid to high 20's for mpg fuel consumption.

Whoops - only just spotted that its a Sport ... I know nothing about those

They can't be that comfortable with leaf rear suspension I would have thought?
They were Mitsi's answer to the Hilux Surf, only not as popular.

I'm sure they have coil springs in the back cj
if I'm right about them all having the 2.5 114hp engine then they're not worth it. fuel consumption is late 20s on average. they're also dog slow, not very manouverable.

For your usage a lighter duty jeep like a Tucson 2.0 130hp would be way faster, about 40% lighter on fuel, more comfortable, nicer interior, way newer design etc, Santa Fe 2.2 would be worth a look too.

Just so we're on the same page. You want one of these for its looks?
Even the 91 shape proper Pajero was a better looking machine.
Pajero and pajero sport are completely different.

If I were you Id buy a late 90s pajero sport for peanuts, run it for a while, then make a decision about spending big money on something so outdated. It'll be the same jeep as an 07.

Or if you're going commercial a swb 3.2 pajero would be the job.

I bought a pajero last year, and putting €50 diesel in every few days and being slower than most things on the road soon killed the notion for me.

this particular one was in bits. the laquer was peeling off all over. lots of rust and an alarming body roll in the corners. plus the leather interior was in bits and the gear throw was about 12 inches!!!

The Toerag and it's Porsche incarnation, the Cayenne, are the ugliest 4x4s around since the demise of the Ssangyong Musso and Korando.

Laquer peel on a 4 year old truck? What sort of mileage was on it?

Well if it was crashed and badly painted...

As regards the body roll, ARB bushed in the front are nearly always shagged and the rear roll bar in puny on them

only 91k KILOMETERS!!! It looked like it was used every day on a building site as i reckon cement would do that to paint. everything was real sloppy.

ahh i see my bad. i think the newer ones are upped to about 140bhp now but they are still a heap, there really a half a pajero, wouldn't touch one.

2.5 not really enough engine for the Toerag, they are over 2000kg and really need a bigger engine, I have friend with one and he is constantly whining about thirst.
Manual not really the best for the 2,5 either the Auto is much better.

if you like the look of the the pajero sport how about a nissan patrol ? or if you want a nice propper 4x4 the Kia sorento drives well, is built on a ladder frame, AWD with low range, alright on fuel and cheap
