The 1.6 diesel is the PSA (Peugeot)engine.... Frugal enough, some DPF issues can arise (where fitted) with higher mileage. Lots of Volvo S40's coming back with DPF problems fitted with same engine. 1.8 is Fords own unit, a bit more rough around the edges and less frugal but pretty bullet proof. Thats my tuppence !

The 1.8 diesel is a bit of a dinosaur. AFAIK its been around since the Sierra! The power delivery is like a light switch, all on or all off.

The 1.6 (16 valve) is a much better engine, consistent power delivery throughout the usable revs and makes a much better drive.

Ford have completely dropped the 1.8

Get the 110hp 1.6 with the DPF, DPF's for these can be got cheap now!

    Edit: Cat/DPF is here: http://www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk/dpf-details.php?ID=BM11005H

Well they can be got cheap but it wont be cheap to replace.

    dpf; 350 euro
top up eolys fluid: 150 euro
    labour:approx 150 euro

650 quid is alot in my opinion and i may be underpricing on the labour. But I would agree about choosing the 1.6 over the 1.8 its a far better engine.

Fair enough, point taken, I should have been clearer.

DPF's used to cost a fortune, with fitting they used to be well in excess of €1000+!

The only good thing about the 1.8 is you get disks in the back.

Tell me about it, I had a 05 Ghia 1.6 TDCi and it still had rear drums, always sticking when parked up after a night of rain.
