Tour de Munster roll call!!

At the MWC spin I came across a few boardsies and I know there were more I did not meet as well as more due to take part but did not attend. As Paul is still looking for sponsorship I'm posting up to see how many from the forum (regardless of how many posts you have logged up) are participating in the TdM 2011 and see if we cant swing something for the Tour.
I'm not roping anyone into anything here I just want to know numbers in an effort to argue for funds!
Nothing may come of it but then again you never know unless you try!
Anyone is welcome to pm me with Q's, advice or abuse.
    Cheers

    So far....

Yep. What have you in mind? Any innovative fund raising ideas are welcome, as it can be difficult tapping the same people year-in year-out.

I am a stupid person, but its not clear what you are asking , are you just asking if anyone will do the TDM 2011 ?

That is what he is asking ....

A few have expressed an interest and I think thebouldwhacker is trying to get an idea of how many boardsies are thinking of/intending giving it a go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

    Hi Michael,
No what I'm trying to do is identify how many boardsies are signed up to do it, entry is full atm.
Its an idea I have to get business sponsorship, all I am interested in is the raw number of posters, who they are individually is really inconsequential to me for this particular idea.
    Are you participating?

@Karlmyson gimme a few days till people reply and I'll reveal all...

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    I'll reveal all...
... I'm not so sure if that's such a good idea ....

As Karlmyson has said any innovative ideas would be well recd. Maybe Boards.ie could come on board.

The charity (Down Syndrome Ireland) is close to my heart as my nephew has DS. So I see at first hand where the sponsorship is spent.
However having raised €250k last year the bar has been set very very high for this year. Also there are so many charities that are deserving whilst the financial circumstances of many people on this island is deteriorating.

Btw. In response to your role call: anseo.

Fair play to Paul and everyone else involved, that was a massive figure! Best of luck this year!

Hey thebouldwhacker, suggestion: edit the first post in this thread to add people's names as the say 'anseo'. That way people can see at a glance.

    Lads,
Also in for this year. Looking forward to it although need to get some serious training in - only ever done the 1 days sportives...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

Good man Funky. I trust that you will do one day in the mankini.
I'm sure you'd raise a fair few shekels for that.

Its a great event, hope to see you at a few of the training rides.

    Great stuff, Funkyzeit.

Seeing as I'm here, can I ask you all to 'Like' the following official Tour de Munster Facebook page. As you will see, there is very little on it right now (a different Facebook mechanism was used for previous Tours de Munster but this has been retired). I need to get the total number of likes on this new page up to 25 before Facebook will allow me to allocate a nice, neat URL for it. Thanks.

    Guys,
Dunno if someone mentioned this already - the online "live" progress/position indicator last year was a great idea but it didn't seem to work 100%. Had hoped to nip outta work to show my support but the updates on the day from Ennis onto Kerry seemed a bit temperamental?

The smartphone app that was used to tweet the position updates was under development at the time by one of the TdM cyclists (or by the company he works for if not him personally). I'm sure it has gone through numerous revisions since last August and is more stable now but I'll mention it to him anyway. Thanks.

Ye could just have been having a day with lotsa mechanicals and punctures too!
Would like to see the latest version of it back this year.

Oh we did that too...the group I was taking had three punctures and one crash between Ennis and Limerick! There's a very wide new cycle path on the old N18 between Clarecastle and Newmarket-on-Fergus and we became convinced it was strewn with flint and glass!

Wed 13th April Official Training starts.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Anyone based in the south east fancy meeting up for spins? I'm not going to make the 13th in Cork so wouldn't mind making up for it down here...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭Funkyzeit

Anyone else coming training next week in Cork?

Any idea what distance/pace it will consist of? Looking forward to meeting some of the heads anyway...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭Phil2me

I'll be there, I reckon about 40K and a fairly leisurely pace, will be alot of newcomers there.

Sorry, my last post was an in joke with phil2me - just trying to make him laugh at his desk.

In answer to your question, the first night back last April was a handy 54.7km loop at 27.1km/h. However, there were no completely new cyclists last year IIRC but there are this year. So phil2me's guess is probably right.

Had a newbie spin this morning with TDM. 32k but was more a chance for ppl to get used to cycling in a group. Nothing too quick so i'd imagine next wednesday will be similar. 21.6kph average speed. Few stops for minor briefings but they'll be gone once the thing gets going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,990 ✭✭✭cantalach

It'll take a few weeks before everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet but come June everyone will be compliant ;) As Paul said in his pre-ride briefing this morning, the TdM School of Group Cycling is maybe a little unorthodox in its heavy reliance on verbal communication rather than just the hand signals that predominate in other groups. But the TdM ultimately has an excellent safety record and most of the credit for this goes to Paul's insistence on following the system he has honed over the last decade. So if you get a telling off about something, as almost everyone does at some stage during the season, try to be thick-skinned and not take offence. The motivation is safety and not a desire to piss you off.

Btw, I was the guy there with Paul at the start on the black Cervélo. Sorry I couldn't come out with you all but I was under domestic pressure to be back by 10:00AM. I was returning from an early morning spin around the time you guys were meeting up so I just called in to the Airport to show my face. Looking forward to getting out on the road with everyone on Wednesday.

Saw the new jersey via twitter feed.
Lopls class - very liquigas. I will have to get matching arm, kneewarmers socks and booties.

Btw Bouldwacker - in your first post you mentioned you were working on a novel fundraising idea. Any update?

Enjoyed last night (bar the downpour coming down from airport) - loads of friendly folk and glad to see a load of TdM newbies like myself there.

Also interested to know any fund raising ideas - and yes I absoultely would wear a mankini if it means sponsorship from Boardsies.

There are probably enough of us to get together on boards to arrange something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

100 quid if you cycle up the Conor pass in the mankini.
The mankini thread should be resurrected to allow other folks to decide anther they would sponsor you.

Who's group were you in on the road?

And, the key question, did you head up Black Hill at the end or take the main road?

Sounds like a deal if other boardies sponsor me - If I could get a sticky from the mods up maybe. Whatcha think?

The last group going out - Bianchi frame with the cervelo top/red arm warmers/Dublin accent...:D

Yea Black Hill - gotta be done...

    What about yourselves?

Good man. The 'Three Bears' as I like to call it.

So I think you would have been in Mick's group then - bearded guy on a nice Airborne Zeppelin titanium frame. Otherwise, you were in Dec's group - skinny guy on a Felt carbon. I was leading the second group out. I'm a tall guy on a black Cervélo RS and if you'd been in my group last night, you'd probably agree that my boardsie name is very apt. But that was only because I was in character :) Be sure to say hi next Monday if you're out.

Not sure what happened but I haven't given up hope on (ab)using the number of us participating, I was trying to get something sorted before the jerseys went to print, always next year.
As for a mankini up Connors pass, want to be a whole load more €100 donations to make that life long slag worth while!!

I am getting a size smaller than normal. Last year I thought size was a little to large. I like a tight jersey to show off my abs however :-)

And magnificent abs they are! First time TdMers might be surprised to know that the mandatory medical on the first morning of the tour often ends up like this:
