Well which one would you go for? i was all set for a type R but didnt realise I would be paying such big insurance and a Celica has caught my eye, so im starting to rethink my decision.

They both fit my criteria (i want something sporty and fast-ish), can afford both (Celica would be cheaper to buy and run though which is a plus) but ultimately which is the better car?

Looks wise they both appeal to me, but only in grey/black and not modded in anyway. I much prefer the interior of the celica, but externally i prefer the civic. Both will do decent mpg, but it dont do to many miles so not a major issue, vast majority of my driving will be city driving. Celica has 190bhp vs the Civics 200bhp - although the civic is a bit lighter so a bit faster i presume.

Which one should i go for do you reckon and why?

Civic type R's don't have anywhere near 200hp. Having said that its still a great car but although they both seem very similar they are chalk and cheese IMO.

The civic is purely hardcore, super sharp handling and low gearing is great on track but means its very twitchy on most Irish roads and sits at nearly 4k rpm at 120kmh!!

The celica is softer, still handles well but would be vastly more comfortable for every day use. Also has a much more solid interior then the civic.

civics probably a bit more practical to live with, but theres a bit of a stigma attached when people ask you what do you drive?

a waste oil burner, vtec just kicked in, scumbag... and on and on...

celica for me, great design, great looking car, not such a fan of the interior, i reckon running costs will be be a toss up, but cheaper servicing costs on the celica, swings and roundabouts.

both cars are a bit marmite to look at.

My mistake, I didn't see ep3 in the heading:o. I assumed(not sure why) that the op was asking about the original Type R.

    EK9 185bhp
    EP3 197bhp

OP, i'd have the Civic anyday of the week, but i would try source a JDM EP3 if it was me.

IIRC they get as standard on top of the Euro spec EP3 :
    • Red Recaros
    • LSD
    • power boost to 220bhp (although our petrol quality will drop that to about 210bhp)
    • HID's as standard
    • Momo Steering Wheel
    • Red floor mat & door lining
    • Privacy glass (rear quarter / tail gate)

The JDM engine has an uprated engine containing JDM springs, valves, pistons
etc plus it does indeed have a smaller cat.
Different gear ratios and mapping in the Japanese car, along with a
different intake and exhaust manifolds as well.

Also, the JDM car has a different wiring loom , so many electrical bits,
like the HID lights, won't just 'plug in' to a UK CTR

Do the JDM cost way more to insure though?

Not mad on the Civics interior, whereas i love the Celicas...other than that im fairly sold on a Type R now i think....until someone suggested a DC5

Ye a JDM usually costs more to insure. Being a Type R there tough to insure as it is, but when its a Jap Import it will be even tougher.

Personally id go for the Celica 190, i love the seating position and the look of a nice silver one, although ive never driven a type r.

    Both great cars though.
