Pointless Political Question

    Trying to settle an argument

    Is there a minimum number of valid votes that must be cast in order for results of the vote in a constituency to be valid? As in is there a quorum required?

    No.

    That's what I thought, but if you have a consituancy where there is only 1 valid vote only giving a first preference, then how do you elect any candidates

    This if course assumes that the candidates live in another constituency or have spoiled their votes

    Don't think so ... as it is still seen as representational.

    Basically the candidates need to reach a quota. And a Quota is determined on the day by dividing the total amount of valid first preference votes by the number of seat +1 and adding 1 to the result.

    e.g.

    41267 votes cast in a 4 seat area. After initial count 147 are found to be spoiled so valid votes is 41120

    41120 / 5 (4 seats plus 1)

    =

    8224

    +1

    Quota = 8225

    Presumably in that case the quota would be 1, and the elector's first preference would be elected, and then the surplus (i.e. the one vote!) redistributed and the second candidate elected and so.

    If the one elector didn't give enough preferences then he gets to be dictator for life. ;)

    Don't think that's right is it?

    It's just 41120/4 = 10280 + 1

    Quota = 10281.

    I think that's it - you may be right though.

    Yes but in my example with one vote the quota is 1 / number of seats plus 1, so no candidate reaches the quota to be elected.

    We were more arguing about if there is part of the election law about a quorum...

    I'm very glad you asked me that question and I'd first like to point out that this important issue is totally unadressed in the policy platform offered by our opponents. We in Finna Guffall believe that this is a key issue for our country going forward and as such it must be prioritised at the top priority level of our multilevel priority portfolio, as a matter of priority. I would also like to point out the previous government's complete neglect of this vital national issue of national interest. The people of Ireland deserve better and we, if elected, will leave no stone unturned, tree unclimbed or bog undrained* in our search for honest, open and transparent answers to this critical question. Nevertheless I would caution against hasty action leading to unintended outcomes and advise that we proceed forward in a measured and prudent manner, cognisant of the potential constitutional stumbling blocks that this complex and sensitive topic may give rise to at the national and European levels. With this in mind and bearing in mind also the... I didn't interrupt you Minister... no I didn't... I didn't, you filthy soup-eating ambusher... thank you chairman... as I was saying we recognise the need for swift and decisive action to resolve this question at the earliest opportunity, and therefore we are prepared to commit, here tonight, that on our entry to governent, we will be immediately commencing to convene a committee to consider the option of instituting an in-depth review process, the report of which will be scheduled for delivery before, or after, the end of the next Dail.

    *In the event that our sophisticated and intelligent electorate should express their democratic wishes in such a way as to give rise to an election outcome in which the numbers stack up to mandate a Finna Guffall/Green party coalition partnership government, in the national interest, going forward, all bogs will be preserved, conserved and protected for the purpose of ensuring an ongoing stewardship of our crucial and beloved environmental, heritage and cultural legacy. Mise Eire, a chairde Gael.

    Of course, it's obvious when you put it that way

    Can I donate to your party?

    Yes, I'll meet you in Flanagan's. A plain brown envelope will be fine to hold the notes.

    Not the lounge, the snug. ;)
