Alfa GT problem. In cold weather hard to start and temperature gauge problem. Linked?

Before I go to the mechanic with this was just wondering if its something small.

I have a 04 Alfa GT which since the snow has been having trouble starting. Now it does start just not easily like it should sometime when its very cold takin say twice of turning the key. Now I'm presuming thats the battery as in the weather now it starts no problem ie when its not as cold.

The other problem which is more annoyin is that the temperature gauge is takin about 10 mins of driving to move to say 70. Its meant to be at the 90 mark. It sits at 50 for ages then moves up to about 70/80 but wont go up as far as the 90 mark.

When I'm blowin hot air into the car as you do when its bloody cold this makes the gauge fall as well.

Any idea on this guys? Are the two issues linked? Is it a small fix?

    cheers.

Cheers for that. You'll think less of me now though as I really dont want to attempt that. Doesnt look easy to me.

However I will get the work done after seeing it as it looks like a job that wont cost huge amounts of money.

Plus I'll probably be selling the car in the next 12 - 18 months and want there to be a good service history.

    Cheers

Were the plugs changed at 60k? (if it's petrol).

I should have said its a 1.9JTD. So no its not petrol.

In fairness not a thing wrong with the car other than this.

Its more annoyin than anythin else.

The car is driving perfect otherwise.
