Guess it had to happen at some stage but last night was my final shift as a Barman

15 years at it and now looking into a dark void

So its Time for a Beer, a Song and a question to anyone that has been through it.

How do you get over the loss of something that you loved doing for a living?

And the song (or 5 )

Sorry to hear that op I hope you get back on your feet soon. you're experienced so that is half the battle. some pubs and clubs are looking for experience staff but you'd be lucky to earn an apprentices salary to be honest.

    where you located?

try not get too down. get all relevant paper work ready and update your cv

    best of luck op

What happened OP? Did your place close down?

That's tough OP, if you post your location we can let you know if we hear of anything going in your area.

Nope just the way the trade is going and the owners have to look at the figures (I do not blame them in any way)

I was working Full time then after cutbacks Part Time and the Hours just fell away (30 hours down to 8 in the space of less then a year)

    OP, sorry to hear that.

This may be no consolation to you but there are thousands in the very same boat as you.

15 years is a long time and naturally leaving something after that length of time is more difficult.

Try to keep yourself occupied and try to establish a daily routine.

Did you actually read his post?

15 years working as a barman, why would he feel the need to upskill or train for anything else?

There is no Shame in being a Barman it is imo one of the best jobs that i could ever wish for

My opinion that i have always held is that there is no point being in a job that forces you to not be yourself that is why the Bar trade has been the job i love

    As for Training

    I have
    Bar Apprentice Diploma

    Bar Management Diploma
Irish Guild Of Sommeliers (Wine) Medal

    Electronics City and Guilds
    E.C.D.L

And Certified as a bloody hard worker

    @ Hot lips

Thank you for the offer of a Sticky But i feel that if this was Stickied then the forum would become a Looking for employment section rather then what it should be.

My OP let me get what i was feeling off my Chest and a weight was taken off me to a degree

Im happy that i still have the thick skin that a Barman needs:cool:

I lost my job as a barman about 7 months ago after 8 years in one pub. I was kind of glad in a way in that the place had really gone down hill and I'd lost all interest in it. I do kind of miss it though and hopefully this week I'll be getting some good news from a new club here so good luck to us both OP :)

It's amazing the amount of people saying things like "why don't you get a proper job?" Ha! I may not have been getting fantastic money but it was more than enough for me, I had zero stress, enjoyed the work mostly, had lots of time off and it's an incredible way to meet people and make friends.

Best of luck m8 and i hope it goes your way with the job.

So many people are ready to put barmen down as drunkards laborers but the fact is the vast majority of people who come into a pub like to have a brief chat/joke/serious discussion about the weather

It is the variety that i love (Even after hearing the same gentleman saying the same repetitive faeces)

sorry to hear that op. But with the list of qualifactions you have it should be no problem getting a new job but maybe after 15 years ya may want to take time of and enjoy urself spend time with the family etc.

Even though it turns out the OP has plenty of various certificates etc even if he didn't what's wrong with just working a normal everyday job and NOT having a degree? Why would he train in anything else when this is the type of job he loves and knows so well

I know a few lads who started off in computers as a hobby and now work for an American company for some serious money with 10years of experience behind each of them and not a degree among them!

Were you one of the barmen in Sin É?

Sorry to hear you were let go OP, its a tough industry at the moment. Maybe try the event line of things? Match days at the Aviva, Croke Park, race days at the dogs, Leopardstown etc. Gigs, concerts...

I'm sure if you are willing to do this type temp. contract work there is a few euro to be made for a 15 year experienced barman.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,351 ✭✭✭Orando Broom

Does Trinity College still have the special events company? Maybe you could look around at some of those companies that do the likes of the O2 and such like, I know they wouldn't be great gigs but they'd bring you to better.

Op, have you ever considered setting up your own party catering service? Just a thought.

Good look with the job hunt.

The Bernard Shaw was looking for staff last time I was in.

Really sorry to hear about this OP. A lot of us have been through it and I can tell you that with some determination and a bit of luck, you can come through the other side, hopefully with a few quid back in your pocket.

The Crown Plaza in Blanch are looking for a bar manager, with your experience I'd say you'd have a good shot at such a position. The Clarion (IFSC) are looking for staff too, along with a couple of other city center locations from what I can glean on jobs.ie. Best of luck to you anyway, I hope it works out!

Sorry to hear of the situtation you find yourself in OP, I am 17yrs in the bartrade myself and work is very thin on the ground, i am down to part time right now myself.

I know of a place that is reopening soon PM me and i will let you know the details, i dont think the people that own it would like its name being spread about in public :)

    OP...try gumtree.ie or adverts.ie.

Go to local bars and drop in your CV.

Advertise in local shops/notice boards etc.

In short...put yourself out there and you'll be back working in no time.

My suggestion would be to do the PSA (doorman licence) and get some work on the doors.

First off after 15yrs behind the bar you'll be good with dealing with people, drunk and sober.. And secondly, you might get cover work behind the bar from there eventually (hopefully) leading to full time hours again.

That place could use a decent hand running her. Worst impression I've got from a pub in a long time and definitely my worst pints of both Heineken and Guinness in Dublin.

Try the Louis Fitzgerald group OP they're always taking on temporary bar and restuarant staff and I'd say you'd be a keeper if you got in with them. I was nearly going working for them before I got my current job and regret it for the last year.
