NI couple's car hit by train at Galway level crossing

_51276275_collisionbetweencarandtrainingalwaycityhm7.jpg The car's engine was ripped off in the collision
A County Fermanagh couple have escaped uninjured after their car was hit by a train at a level crossing in Galway.
Rachel McClean,19, and Ryan Jones, 20, drove onto the level crossing in Murrough around 1200 GMT on Monday.
Their vehicle was hit by the Dublin train which was en-route to Galway and travelling at 115km per hour.
The front of the car was smashed but the couple were unharmed.
The accident is being investigated by the Railway Accident Investigation Unit and Irish Rail.
Weekend break Irish Rail said initial indications show that the gates were left open by a previous user.
The couple, from Lisnaskea, who are both students at the South West College in Omagh were on a weekend break in the Irish Republic when the crash happened.
Mr Jones was driving Miss McClean's car and saw the train a split second before she did and threw the car into reverse.

That moved the car a little bit back. The front tyre burst when the train hit them and that may have saved them from being dragged in front of the train.
The engine at the front got ripped off but the couple, although shocked were not hurt.
"Absolute miracle" They were taken to hospital in Galway but were discharged after being examined.
Rachel's father, Willie said it was an "absolute miracle they are still alive".
"I got a text from my daughter on Monday to say their car had been hit by a train," he said.
"My blood ran cold when I read this but I was very relieved when I read that they were ok.
"They cheated death by two inches."

    TL;DR

Don't be lazy it's not that long, go up and read it ya git

There are - "Irish Rail said initial indications show that the gates were left open by a previous user" - Their excuse is the warning signs were in Irish though.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

You should have heard all the engines going out by that way when it happened. I live about 15 minutes from there. The Galway Advertiser Facebook page posted images from the accident - they're quite large, but the quality and size show the damage caused.

What about the damage to the train?

I assume it was one of their latest 22,000 series DMU sets.

Down in Cork we'd call that a motorway. :(

It's at times like this Mr Testicle delighted in his wise choice of username. 'Who gives a debthree about the train' simply doesn't work.

The hard pressed tax payers of Ireland:mad: Even if it's insured, and I'd ask why if it is as insurance for damage to a train would make little sense, loss on profit sharing or future premia increases would mean it still costs the tax payers of Ireland:mad: The person who left the gate open should be tracked down and made pay.

Now I'm no expert but aren't cars meant to stop just before the red sign in that photo, and not immediately after it ?

The Signs I can see in that photo are in English

    one clearly says
Have you Shut the Crossing Gates?
    think safety

Now that Sign, coupled with the Stop sign, and the Dirty big TRAIN LINE in front of them should maybe have indicated to these idiots that they might just be sitting rather close to a level crossing.

Moral of the story, if you decide to hoof off down some Boreen for a bit of canoodling, check your surroundings before things kick off, ya never know you might be parked on a feckin train line

The driver probably saw the warning sign in advance and thought it was for a ladder.

Maybe he thought the warning signs were warning about wearing protection, i mean, wtf else would a tourist be doing in a boreen at the back of a housing estate?

    That's clearly Irish! :D

There's another sign, that was shown on the news. The notice type ones that tell you you're about to cross a level crossing with manual gates. It's as Gaeilge.

Heard Barry Kenny on the radio this morning talking about this. The impression he gave was that it was a crossing between a couple of fields with little more than a normal gate. He's giving them more credit than they deserve IMO. You'd want to be blindfolded to not realise there is a train track there.

Yeah, may be a problem, but it was in English where it mattered.
