I would love to know if anyone here has ever travelled on a freighter, its something I'd love to do but haven't been able to find out much about it. Would appreciate hearing any experiences anyone has had, how they organised it etc :)

Irish Times Go travel supplement did a bit on freighter travel recently, http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/travel/2011/0205/1224289008523.html

I looked into it before as a method of travel. There are a couple of websites that provide info. Some are more marketing savvy than others.

Many options are more expensive than I expected. I guess in the old days people paid to travel on a freighter because there was a spare bed, whereas now ship owners are seeing a 'cruise market' as they see it, and have upped their prices accordingly.

Grimaldi Lines looked interesting from what I remember.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_St_Helena_(1989) this one also caught my eye.
I'm sure there's loads of options out there in the world, but food accomm etc will probably vary.

I looked into it to travel between Arabia (UAE or Oman) and India. It was incredibly expensive- I got quotes of between €1,200 and €1,600 per person. From the photos I was sent it did look quite luxurious. We didn't want to fly but ended up doing so as that cost €125.

We met a guy in Oman who had taken a freighter the other way- Mumbai to Salalah in Oman. Similar price, 7 days journey. He enjoyed the experience and said he was looked after really well.
