have heifers that were fed on just good quality silage until january and then started feeding very small amount of beef nuts , 1kg per head a day.I have noticed a huge increase in price since last year so wondered is there any benefit in feeding such small amounts with the high cost of meal. Hope to have them finished on grass by july/august so was thinking would i be better spending the money on fertiliser so i have good grass when they are let out, or just pumping them when they are out on grass .

If your planning on finishing them off grass I would stop feeding meal. Many farmers actually cut off feeding for the last month of housing to increase the rate of compensatory. Getting them out to grass as early as possible would be the most cost effective way of finishing them.
