Timber frame Q

I know nothing about building practices but something that I am wondering is why does everyone use block construction as an outer layer with timber frames?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the block outer layer is not structural so why not use something more efficient. Would wood cladding or maybe a modern sheeting material with good insulation properties not be better?

Block work is cheap (cheaper than any of the alternatives) and more robust too in most cases. It takes alot less maintenance than the altervatives. That's why it's popular.

There is no advantage in using an insulated anything outside a ventilated cavity and I wouldn't build a TF without a ventilated cavity.

the definition of proper materials in teh building regs require a dwelling to be "sound" for a period of 60 years (i think!)

therefore if you build by an off-standard method, the onus is on you to prove that this method will meet these requirements.

Single skin building does occurm with either wood cladding, cement board etc as a finish onto TF

as SAS says though, building without a vented cavity in a TF house is high risk, therefore any insulative material on the external of a cavity is useless.
The outer "leaf" is the weather proofing.

Its quite possible to build using any finishing material (eg slate finish, profiled galvanise etc....) once you can prove its a "proper material" fit for purpose

    ..it's all down to price.

With block leaf, rendered, coming in around €28 sq/m, Cementitious board comes in anywhere from €43 - €73 sq/m

Unless you have a specific requirement for it, therefore, most people wont use it, as they can't justify the cost, which I fully understand.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
