What MPG to expect from Honda Civic

I was wondering if any Honda Civic 2006/7 Hatch or Saloon owners could advise me.

I am thinking of buying either a hatch or a saloon to commute from Portlaoise to UCD every day. I really would prefer to get the 1.7ltr and hear reports of 40mpg from Parker User Review and the reliability index? Not sure... I was wondering what kind of mileage I can expect to get from the 1.4s, 1.7s and the Diesels. I was really in the market for a diesel but it's totally false economy, after Tax, Insurance and the extra you pay, you have to drive at least 50,000 miles to break even.

Something like this is interesting me. http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Civic/1.8I-SES/201106201209558/advert?channel=CARS

    Any advise is welcomed.
    Thanks.

Maybe 40mpg for the petrols. Higher for the diesels obviously.

As usual fuel economy is only a factor in overall running costs. People here are obsessive about it. Look at parts, servicing etc. too.

Yeah! Thanks. Can you tell me why the Civic in Particular has a higher mpg to a lot of other 1.8 cars?

I was really obsessed with Diesels there for a while but once I spoke to my Wife's Uncle who is a mechanic, he told me about elevated servicing needed as well.

This is good. Its the Parker Diesel vs Petrol Calculator. It allows you to enter a petrol and a diesel and it calculates when you will break even. Its actually quite surprising on some of them.

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/petrol-vs-diesel/

Very interestingly, if you enter a Honda Civic 1.8 petrol this is what is returned. ''There is no suitable alternative car to compare to. There is no diesel model which is cheaper to run.''

    Thanks a mill.

    I recently got a 2006 1.8 i-vtec hatchback.

With no motorway/dual carriage way use, and just driving "as usual" in traffic light infested suburbs, I get between 33 - 36 mpg.

Natural driving on motorways I get about 42.

[V] Careful driving on motorway, normal roads combined I get about 46. I reckon it would go longer on extended motorway driving, but yet to test it.

The lowest it will go is 32, you won't get worse than that.

The 1.8 I-VTEC in the Civic is actually quite good on fuel. They were designed to be efficent and the Civic is not a very heavy car. They have circa 140bhp so are nippy enough too.

If you are still worried about fuel economy then the Civic saloon was also available as a hybrid too, electric motor with a 1.3 litre petrol engine:

Only really at peak efficency when mostly driven around urban areas though.

I had the 1.8L saloon for 3 years and it returned 42mpg regularly. Excellent for a 1.8 petrol and nippy too.
