    If the spring is bad....:eek::eek::eek:

    Silage is really cheap this year. Its going at less than €20 per bale. you couldn't afford to buy ration or nuts if you can get silage at €20 a bale because of current meal prices. You could also look at buying loose silage by the lorry or trailer load. loads of guys on donedeal and farmers journal with it. other options would be beet but you would need to have the machine to handle it.

    In my personal opionon, if you shop around you will buy silage cheaper than you can afford to make it. Its getting to the time of year when people will be trying to sell off what they have to make space for next year.

    agreed, I'd planned on making bales for sale this year, but looking at the prices I dont know if I will, maybe do a few acres to dip the toe in the water.

    I dont know what part of the contry you are in but I have my milkers out and they can come in and have some maize silage when they choose
    I am thinking of putting late calvers on rented farm away from milking block if weather improves a bit.
    I think maize silage a few nuts and a bit of grass for milkers even a few hours grazing would save silage and baled silage for dry cows

    running tight on silage here too. walked the farm and done a measurement no grass growth here and no paddock with enough on it to graze, so i'm buying maize and mixing it with silage for the milkers and the weanling heifers went out saturday and are on the silage ground and 2kgs of meal. look around the area might get a good deal on a pit of silage before everyone else starts looking.

    A there will be loads of silage for this spring. In the last 3 weeks bales have dropped from €30 to €20. Guys are getting worried that they will be left with them.
