Disease was always the biggest risk when they decided in all their wisdom to shut the other A.I. stations....

Surely, even when they have open days at these AI stations, there is a big risk of someone bringing in a disease.

.. reminds me of tully a few years ago:rolleyes:

NCBC never had an open day though.

The problem is the country is riddled with it.
Its very difficult to keep a disease out in that situation

Its a terrible shame that this has happened again, do they have to be slaughtered now? Who was that complaining about all the OMAN sons?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,552 ✭✭✭pakalasa

CF85, KIB, CVV, FL25 - Christ, they were all top class Beef bulls.

Stupid question, but can IBR be passed on in the semen. If not, why do they have to be slaughter?

can it not be treated, prob highly contagious? jesus it nearly broke my heart to send a good bull to factory last year when he got wicked, imagine having to slaughter one of those animals. terrible pity

"...attention focusing on the possibility that some of the bulls may have had a latent form of IBR when they first arrived at the stud."

Would apply to any herd in the country - no wonder it's widespread.

Have FLT SOK and KOZ heifers on the ground this year and they were top of my list for this year. I pity poor stanflt. FLT was looking to be a topper:mad:. Is it time for a national IBR and BVD programme now that brucellosis is gone?(famous last words:confused:) Like BVD, i think IBR is a venereal disease and can be passed in semen:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭Sundy

Pity. Had seen some nice bulls out of KIB this year.

From what ive read today semen can pass it on. Also i dont believe that vaccinated bulls can be used for AI.

Poor auld Stanflt might be in the local drowning his sorrows! Pity, saw the catalogue at the week-end and FLT was looking very good.

i have said it many times on here brucellosis is NOT gone , it is rampant across the border , i cant understand the relaxing of the rules for it... just wait and see it wil be back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

There is a good bank of straws built up since the last clear test in December so dont fret too much about not getting straws for this season. get your orders in early to be safe though.

IBR possitive straws cannot be traded.

Have a word with Gerry Adams when he comes canvassing. I'm sure he can sort it for you:D. I agree with you on the relaxing of the rules up to a point. It was nearly gone before and rules relaxed and it took 10 years to get back again to the same point. What the hell are they at up there that they cant sort it out? But do you think when(if?) we clear it we should have another disease testing scheme:confused:

Its an awful pity indeed such fine sires destroyed... just from the NCBC sit it said "High profile beef sires have also been affected including: CF85, KIB, FL25, CVV, FIW and AGI.”

Well on catalogue im looking at 2010 sires CF85 and KIB are facing each other on the same page and likewise the limousines BUT (FL25) and CVV are on same page, did they just pick out two lim and 2 charolais to use as a reference .. the whole shaggin lot could be gone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

they arent all gone but there is more than that.
those bulls all have subsantial reserves built up at this stage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,552 ✭✭✭pakalasa

NCBC was formed out of the merger of Progressive Genetics(Enfield, Co Meath) and the Munster Cattle Breeding Society (mallow , Co Cork).

Whether every bull stands at Enfield or not, I dont know.
At least most of the BB bulls will be fine, since they import a lot of these.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Bizzum

I wonder will there be any implications for straws bought recently off them?

As regard open days at Enfield, I was at several. The last I attended was 'open' but behind glass!

Edit: I read the statement on their website and note their is no issues with straws bought off them recently!

"The fact that 65 bulls were being kept in one hall and air space could never be allowed to happen again..."

A bit of common sense wouldn't go astray would it. I've heard of some farmers that wouldn't even put 60 young calves in the one shed, let alone prize bulls.
