I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure if you can give blood after smoking weed, and if so, how long do you have to wait?

I'd prefer only to hear from people who ACTUALLY know, thanks

Personally I don't know, and to be honest, unless someone works for the IBTS, the only way they would have come into "ACTUALLY knowing" is open to you as well - ring the IBTS on 1850 731 137 and ask, it can be done completely anonymously.

Stays in the blood for up to three months.

Stays in the urine for 30 days.

OP here. I called up and the doctor said it was all fine. They're only really concerned with cocaine and intravenous drugs

    Hi!

I've actually asked this question before, I was filling in the form and it asked about drug use etc. I said I smoked weed, they said it was fine as long as you weren't high when you gave blood.

Edit: This was a couple of years ago so maybe check again before you do it :)

Aye that's true but would be trace amounts that have no effect on someone receiving it. As the OP has said its cocaine and heroin they have a problem. And thats due to the methods used for these drugs being high risk -IV/insuffhalation(snorting) - for blood borne viruses

Well the naval medic is incorrect, or at least incomplete in their information. A heavy, habitual smoker can, indeed have levels which are detectable up to 30 days later. This, is an extreme edge case however. For the average consumer (2 - 3 joints/day) you're looking at about 10-15 days maximum, and if you don't generally smoke, and have, say 2 joints, it will be indetectable in often less than 5 days time.

I hate this thread!!! Is it ok to do irresponsible sugar and then give blood?

I did my work experience in a regional hospital. While I was there I observed a man donating blood that was maroon or almost brown. the Doctor asked me to comment on it. I said the patient was giving blood but it was unusually dark. he said the patient had an excess of iron in the blood (haemochromatosis). I asked the patient about their lifestyle diet etc. Nothing unusual. The Doctor asked what I thought. I asked if the blood could be given to an anemic patient? The doctor said this was not standard practice but in theory "yes".

He then asked me if I would accept the blood. I said I didnt know why but I would want it from a completely healthy person. Ask someone who doesnt take drugs if they would like your blood. I sure as hell wouldnt. Its this kind attitude that caused blood scandals in the past (Hep C and HIV).

The bolded bit is completely untrue.

And if you had a choice between dying and accepting some blood that a doctor recommended, you'd take the blood

In every thing medical there are constant quality check to prevent cock ups. For you to take a pill as an ordinary patient it must have a negative reaction of less than one in 10,000. 30,000 field trial must be conducted. There is no guarantee of success at this level. This is all to ensure that every patient gets the highest quality medicine.

With regards to putting something that was in someone else, I would want to 100% sure the candidate was the best one available. They don't screen candidates for the fun of it.

OP ask someone who doesn't smoke would they like to receive blood from a tobacco smoker ... see what reaction you get!!

As the OP got their answer from a qualified professional and this thread is now veering wildly off-topic - I'm locking it.
