Can't update to new itunes version! Wrecking My head!

For the last 6 or maybe 8 weeks, every time I load up itunes, it says there is a new software version available for my iphone, but that I need to update itunes first ( to 10.1.2 I think). No matter what I do, it won't work. It sometimes goes to about 69% and then just stops. It says if I have a problem to go to tools and select 'download only', I've done this too.
I've tried doing it through Mozilla and Google Chrome, I have tried deleting temp files, I've set up a new administrator account, and still ZILCH! Been at it all evening again and feel like throwing laptop out the window at this stage!
Am I missing something or what is going on? Any ideas? :)

I take it you're using Windows then? What version? Tried uninstalling iTunes and going for a clean install of it?

Windows 7, should've stated that sorry... I am half afraid to uninstall it in case I never get it back again, even the version I have now.

I had this problem a while ago. I downloaded the itunes installer from Apple and ran that instead of updating from within itunes itself. The installer sees that you have itunes already and upgrades it.

Update Windows first and then try again!

I've seen this if I try to download from within my work firewall. If I download it at home it works fine. Could your problem be firewall-related?

Sorry guys, was away for few days and not at the laptop (Got vexed with it! Ha ha!) ;) Thanks for the replies....
I got it sorted... I don't really know how it worked, but it did. I deleted the new administrator account and set up yet another one. Tried again and just got the same ole crack, went on for maybe 10/15 goes at it. On next go, got up to 94% installed and stuck there for AGES! I paused the download and resumed after a min or 2, and install continued (although painfully so! A fraction of a percentage at a time!) Anyway, went on like this for what was like an eternity, pausing, resuming etc and it finally worked!
So annoying though, the whole process -
